I have a http://vaio.sony.co.uk/view/ShowProductCategory.action?site=voe_en_GB_cons&category=VN+TX+Series

Sony Vaio laptop which is generally brilliant. I use it when in bed for surfing, working and watching DVDs.

Over the last couple of days the DVD-RW drive has been playing up and now it won't play DVDs.

When I put a disc in it whirs but never seems to 'catch' and 'load' the disc. It will do this three times, as if re-trying, and then give up. Occasionally one of the three attempts will feature a longer whir as if the disc is about to work...then nothing.

A couple of times the disc has worked and I've watched the DVD no problem.

I've tried different DVDs....same prob.

I've looked via explorer and PowerDVD. Disc does not show up. Clearly it's not being read.

Any suggestions? I've got a Jack Bauer addiction to feed!

If that doesn't work, Paul, I would completely reinstall your OS.

I have a sony vaio, too, and haven't had any problems with the DVD drive. But they do get grit and dust in 'em that need to be cleaned. This happens a lot at work.

I've burned a lot of songs and video on my sony without a problem, yet...mine is a year and a half old.

I second the suggestion to make sure everything is clean before anything else.

Don't do that... It's a hardware issue and not a software thing.

I second the brown eye, er dirty lens.... Try the cleaner... DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH YER FINGERS!

Are these "real" disks? Aka not bootlegs or burns?

Gotta stop watching all those dirty movies..

It depends. If he accidentally erased or changed functions on his PC, programs may not operate correctly. Just a thought since it's helped me in the past.

Not yet. Can't find a DVD-RW drive cleaner to buy near where I live - DVD cleaners yes but they all say not to be used on PCs. Ordering one online

Windows? Does the computer see the drive? Have you tried a data disc in the drive? Can you see a directory? Can you read or play CD's? It might be a problem with the DVD software.
