I recently received a Toshiba Satalite laptop from my son that he had been using at work. It has a Wifi card and my son had been using that feature at coffee shops and motels. I have a Netgear router set up in my house that I have been using in conjunctions with my Palm TX. I have no problem hooking up my Palm to the router. My problem is I cannot seem to hookup the laptop to the router. When I do a wifi scan on it, it shows no signal available. Is there anything that I am overlooking?

Right kind of wifi for the router/computer match up? ...'A' or 'B/G'?

That doesn't matter.. Both should be backward complient.

Did you setup the router yourself? I'm think 2 things...

`1) Make sure the Wifi is turned on, on the computer. There's a little antenna icon in the bottom right.
2) Make sure that the router is broadcasting the SSID, i.e. the network is sending out it's name. Thats shown in the wireless page of the router.

Might be as simple as a switch on the laptop. My laptop has a little slide switch in front of the computer labeled "WLAN." I know from experience, as I spent an hour or so trying to get my router to work when I first hooked it up...I finally figured it out after pulling my hair out - the WLAN slider was on OFF  :)

'A' doesnt work with 'B/G', 'B/G' doesnt work with 'A'. If you have a card or router that does both A and B/G, then it'll work, but otherwise they will never talk to each other as they are on totally different frequencies, as well as format.

Sadly.... I didn't even read the 'A' part...:o

However, As he said it doesn't show up.... He's not at that part yet. But Palms are 'B' so that shouldn't be an issue.

I checked all switches and they are in the on position. The Wifi switch area lights up so I know it works. I am going to place a call to Netgear to see if they have any ideas.

Make sure that your comps wifi is set to see <any> available wifi network. My work laptop can "block" other networks if I have it set to only look for specific networks.
