MS Specialist in Michigan

I've been recently diagnosed with MS. As some of you know, it is a devastating diagnosis. I've been searching and searching for a Doctor who specializes in MS, to no avail.

Does anyone know of a MS specialist in the greater Detroit metropolitan area?

Any help would be so very appreciated.

First, have you contacted the local chapter of the NMSS? They should have a list of MS specialists...not just neurologists but also urologists, social workers, psychologists, etc. http://www.nmssmi.org/

Secondly, you can get a list of physicians who are recommended by other people with MS at http://clams.org/goodocs.html There are several listed for Detroit.

I would also recommend that you look for interdisciplinary services (not just a physician, but also MS nurses, PTs, OTs, psychologists, speech pathologists, social workers, etc. etc.). You may need all of these experts to help you deal with this disease. This is best found at a MS Center. In Detroit you can go to The Multiple Sclerosis Center for Treatment and Research, at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

I would also strongly recommend that you get involved with a local MS support group. Your local NMSS chapter will have a list of those available. Often there is a newly diagnosed group that combines support with education. My mother has MS (PPMS, EDSS 8.5) and has found her local support group a source of much information, contact and resources info, and also a good group of friends who understand.
