What are some alternatives to Fentanyl that don't work QUITE as well but have less of a constipating factor? My SCI doctor mentioned a time released pill that I would take every morning, what was he taling about? Thanks

Why are you taking it? You said you don't have neuropathic pain, so what is causing your pain? This makes a difference.

In my opinion, there are two kinds of pain: neuropathic and physical pain. The Fentanyl takes care of all the pain that Gabapentin or Neurontin doesn't. If I don't take Fentanyl, I'm in HORRIBLE pain. Narcotics are the only things that allow me to live my life. I tried taking non-narcotics for my back pain and they didn't work.

Oxycontin (is that what your doc was referring to?) and methadone come to mind, but they're also going to slow the bowels.

Have you had a trial with TENS?? Long term orthopedic pain from the fracture site is rare unless something abnormal is going on there. Have you had a re-evaluation by an orthospine specialist?

Because of the very struggle from pain my every day presents to me, I cannot often post as often as I feel compelled to.
A backwards way of saying this thread compells me to comment on.

First of all, I have been diagnosed, if it's technically possible to do so, with severe neuropathic pain.
I tried the Medtronics spinal stimulator twice: both time trying to replace fentanyl as my main armament against my neuro pain. Both times it didn't even scratch the surface. I just got a significant vibrating sensation.
If it made a dent towards relief I would have kept it.
Maybe in theory it worked, but the human anatomy tends to be complex.
Anything is worth a try in order to break from Fentanyl.

My problem is with the nuro pain also, yeah my joints hurt in my legs but nothing to compare the nuro pain. Very seldom do I have back pain anymore. But I understand to the want to get away from the Fentanyl. Hell you get hooked on it, but to live you got to use it. Wish there could be something else.

I can't stress enough, how good Movicol is for constipation. If you use Fentanyl and it works, carry on with it and use Movicol and it will balance out the constipation.

Or I use Morphine Sulphate which is a time release drug like Oxycontin.

All the best.

I use MS also, works like a charm. It helps so much, and it isn't so constipating like the other meds I've tried. All the best, Tiff

I am 44 and have diabetes I causing acute peripheral neuropathy. I have had the fetanyl patches for several years but with the diabetes I sweat alot and the patch gets loose and as soon as it looses contact with skin it stops working, I have asked my doctor to change the Rx to every 2 days instead of every 3 but I am waiting for her to contact the insurance company in order to get it approved. Does anyone know of any pills that work just as well. they are supposed to last 3 days but I'm lucky if they last 2.

My fiancee's pain doc just put him on Amitiza for constipation and it has worked much better than senna and colace, which is what he had been using for constipation before.

He was on patches and recently switched to Morphine Sulphate - both are terribly constipating for him, but the Amitiza has really helped.
