Is it true that on Feb 1, 2019 the world is scheduled to end?

Scientists have discovered an asteroid, 2002 NT7, which may possibly strike Earth on Feb 1, 2019. It's thought to be large enough to destroy a continent on impact.

The Discovery Channel had a show on this. They said they are working on some kind of satellite that will guide this asteroid away from our atmosphere by using some kind of gravity pull.

Alrighty, so I found this regarding the Mayan date of 2012. Opinions please from anyone with a mathematics or astronomy background.

http://www.levity.com/eschaton/Why2012.html

December 21st, 2012 represents an extremely close conjunction of the winter solstice sun with the crossing point of Galactic Equator and the ecliptic.

BTW, I don't believe that the world will end on this day.

Last week I bumped into a drunk guy down at the beach who said the World is going to end this year - he mumbled something about May.

NASA has a Near Earth Object Program (NEOP) that detects and tracks all asteroids and other space objects that may hit the earth. http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/neo/

Since this program started, the number of large asteroids increased markedly. The number of discoveries declined as the visible ones were documented but the number of known near earth asteroids (NEA) have increased exponentially http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/stats/images/site_km.png
http://neo.jpl.nasa.gov/stats/images/web_total.png

Here is a list of near-misses that are anticipated in the coming 12 months. Don't you feel like a deaf deer who has closed his eyes and wandered out on a road, you are wondering where all the wind is coming from, and you decide to open your eyes? Yes, there are a lot of near-misses going on all the time. Live every day as if it were your last.

A mountain of rock and iron is hurtling towards us
from space. Apophis -- a 300-meter diameter asteroid --
is still millions of kilometers distant. But in 2029,
it will make a spectacularly close passage by our
planet. When it does, its orbit around the Sun will
be affected.

A shift of just a few hundred kilometers, and Apophis
could return in 2036 to slam into Earth, creating
widespread devastation.

Alarming news? Sure. But what's really disturbing
about the possibility of Apophis slamming into our
planet -- an impact that would unleash the energy
of 65,500 Hiroshima-sized atomic bombs -- is the
fact that no one, anywhere, knows how to track this
asteroid accurately enough right now to properly
assess its danger to Earth 30 years from now.

Which is why we must confirm, one way or another,
that there's really no chance of impact. Will
Apophis pass through the "keyhole," the small area
on its 2029 path that would cause it to hit Earth
on its next orbit in 2036? We have to find out,
because if an impact is likely to occur, we're
going to need all the time possible to plan and
implement space missions to deflect it away.

and what about the mayan calendar peaked your interest? I was first introduced to the Sixth Age concept in '93 or '94, thanks to the Shadowrun series of novels. In them, The Awakening occurs on December 21, 2012 and magic returns to the Earth.

Edgar Cayce and a few previous "prophets" like Nostradamus were profiled on Decoding the Past on 10/28 (a 2005 repeat) and they discussed how many of their end-of-the-world predictions coincided with the Mayan calendar.

I don't think the world will end then, but I have always thought it would be cool if there was an Awakening and magic did return.

Do I believe it will? No, but I sure hope I'm wrong. :)

A random thought for DA: if Hillary wins and the world does end in 2012, she will be our last sitting President... does that mean she will preside over our destruction? (The same could be said for Giuliani or Romney, so don't get too excited. :p)
