Anyone else seen this show? I absolutely love it! Completely addicted! Forensics technician for Miami Metro Police Dept, also a serial killer. You can catch all the episodes on Demand. :applaud:

Someone else was telling me about the series. There is a book out called "Darkly Dreaming Dexter", which the show is based on. I've only seen parts of an episode and Dexter appears to be one sick individual.

Last night's 'An Inconvenient Lie' was the best episode of Season 2 yet ..
I am loving this new character Lila! Wonder if Dexter will end up putting her down .. or if she has anything going on in her life besides attending NA meetings. When Dex was up there confessing his sins (somewhat) near the end, I thought that was some of the best writing and acting yet. I was totally gripped.
Dexter's world is unravelling. He *is* connected. See how he plunged the knife into that car salesman after he called his girlfriend a C U Next Tuesday?
And Doakes .. that left me perplexed. He said he knew that Dexter was connected to the Ice Truck Killer ... then he's satisfied that he's just an addict and that explains away the sly behaviour? That storyline isn't over yet ...
Someone on another message board came up with a good theory that Maria was seeing Pascal's fiance .. but I don't see that at all. Not yet anyway. Thoughts?

I am totally addicted to Dexter. I love the little smirk smile, the total devotion to his mission of offing the bad guys. With the stalking that Doakes is doing these days it is hard to decide who is the bigger psychopath. The writing is superb. I haven't rooted for a villian since "Tony Soprano and tha boys" last graced the tube.

I caught season one on DVD and it's got this quirky twisted appeal. It really reminds me of American Psycho. It's probably not on my top pick of shows, but it does provide some good entertainment.

That was probably one of the best episodes ever. Finally another "Dark Passenger". It will be very interesting to see how that story unfolds. I'm wondering if Lila has killed people in the past, what kind of measures has she taken not to get caught. She could be a nice devilish playmate for soulless Dexter . I'm just hoping her past doesn't come back and drag Dexter down with her.
Since she wasn't raised with the code of Harry I can easily see how she could pick up victims from NA meetings and do them in with drugs. An overdosed addict probably wouldn't raise too much suspicion.
About the car salesman, what other movies has he played in? I know I've seen him before but I can't think of where.

I am really liking this new character Lila! Me too. Interesting artwork in her studio.
What was the significance of Doakes killing that man on the boat?
The mother has pretty good intuition when she warns Rita about Dexter hiding something. If they only knew...
lynnifer
10-24-2007, 08:06 AM
I'm not sure .. but I had thought Doakes was going to let that man go. Hmmm ... guess he's not as dirty as I thought he was. I know they're shying away from what the books have, but in some places they're following that line of story. By the way, hope I'm never 'Mozambiqued!'

I thought for sure Dex was going to take out the man who chain-sawed his mother!
Who thinks he'll go back and finish the job... ? He's getting careless and leaving loose ends.
And what's up with Lila - see Dexter's face when she admitted to killing her boyfriend by burning the house down - and the red colouring of blood on the 'cottage porn' picture?
This is getting good ... who thinks last season was better than this one or vice versa?
doingtimeonmyass
10-31-2007, 10:40 AM
For sure this one is better. A couple of things I thought were strange last year was how Dexter never caught on at his sister's boyfriend was the killer. If he is supposed to be a big bad serial killer, that would be obvious to him. Secondly in the last episode when the cops came across Rudy's body and automatically called it a suicide. Wasn't he strapped down to a table? If you can slit your throat without using your hands, I'd like to see that!
I can't believe Dexter is going to let his mother's murder live. Somehow an ass beating and telling the guy how he's affected his life just doesn't seem to fit the crime. When he was in the bar beating him up I was thinking about all the DNA evidence being left at the crime scene (especially when he spit on him).
How long do you think it will be before Deborah ends up having sex with the FBI agent? Or is he simply a mentor to her? Either way there is some chemistry there between them.
As the season progresses I am liking the lieutenant less and Doakes a whole lot more.

no one else f'n freaked out when he went to clean his boat?!
I was wondering about that. Using luminal and a black light to clean your boat does seem a bit extreme. Then again he is a clean freak and a blood splatter expert. He could argue he's obsessive-compulsive and trying to get rid of any fish blood although it does seem a stretch. It will be interesting to see what happens if his actions were caught on surveillance cameras.

I am liking Lila and Dex together .. but poor Rita! I thought Lundy was suspicious of Dex, until he said he couldn't take another 'titty joke' from Masuka! I've seen previews for next week's episode ... Doakes is back after Dexter. This is getting good. Dex is changing soooo much!!!

Lila is even stranger than Dexter, if that is possible. I do feel badly for Rita, but she is such milk toast for someone like Dexter, and while I think he did care about her, she mostly served as a normalizing external feature to make Dexter seem to fit into a world in which he clearly feels alien. Am I the only one whose rage at Harry is growing by leaps and bounds? Turns out his altruism in taking Dex in was motivated by less benevolent reasons, (which explains why his brother was left to fend for himself as a child) and he certainly took an innocent boy and transformed him into a psychopath with is "code of Harry." Doakes is just plain creepy, and I am beginning to wonder how much longer Dexter can afford to let him live. Now that Doakes has killed he just might fit the qualifications as a future victim, and he certainly is pushing Dexter in that direction.

I don't think Harry turned him into a psychopath, but used his set of rules to protect Dexter. He must have noticed Dexter's behavior growing up and realized it was something he could not change.
Doakes doesn't yet meet the criteria for Dexter's Rosewood box. So far he has killed in self-defense. That was awesome the way Dexter got Doakes off his ass, however now that he is on administrative leave, he has all the time in the world to get back at Dexter.
I do have sympathy for Rita. She was a good accessory to make him appear normal and blend in with society. They are a good-looking couple. Lila on the other hand comforts yet controls Dexter. Nice touch with the Bay Harbor butcher manifest.
Dexter puzzles me with his sudden lust given he is not human and unable to have emotions. I think eventually Lila will threaten Rita and Dexter will have to protect her for the sake of the kids and his feelings for her. It's a similar story all over again. He must do away with the person who understands him for a life that rejects him. Being a serial killer can't be easy.
Lila is like heroin. It's probably fun to try, but extremely dangerous.
Eileen
11-12-2007, 10:21 AM
Doingtime,
I know the show portrays Harry as realizing that Dexter was different from other kids and somehow needed to be taught a code to channel his impulses, but while it makes for a great show, in real life I would like to think that someone in a caretaking role would have the decency to take the very young Dexter to a child shrink, realizing that he is suffering from unbelieveable trauma, dissociation, and PTSD. He was only three when he saw both parents butchered and then lived with the dead bodies for a few days, drenched in their blood. With help a child could have been steered in a different direction, and followed a path to healing instead of simply following "the code" that allows his psychopathy to play out in a more acceptable way.
Lila is so strange she makes Dex look like the normal one! She gives me the creeps, as does Doakes. You're right, now that Doakes has been put on leave heaven only knows what revenge he will plan for Dex. Doakes is so disturbing to me that if Dex took him out I would probably be applauding it, which is the reason the show is so appealing to me. It is so well written that I find myself rooting for the only one (Dexter) who is labelled a psycho, although the ones without the label I often find more diabolical.

Did you notice Dexter knows something isn't right with the fire? The light should have been wrecked if it was a real fire.
Dtoma... Dexter is coming back to humanity, hence the emotion... especiallywhen he killed that guy for insulting Rita.
Lila has certainly pushed Dexter further back to humanity, but Rita and kids was the true start, with showing him true love. I also think, Lila might be a Dexter canidate, with her "accidental" fires, remember her ex died in a fire she set.

I had to watch this week's episode a day later because of work ... but ...
Regarding the light ... see I got something else out of that? I saw Dexter looking at the light and seeing that she had gotten it fixed ... as in she gets what she wants and will manipulate to get it. She knew that Dexter would be with Rita and the kids ...
Another thing. I don't get the title of this episode: That Night, a Forest Grew. Is it because Dexter is planting seeds with regard to the Bay Harbour Butcher case?
And Lundy. Lundy is going to catch him .. he's too close for comfort.
I just about crapped my pants when Dexter head-butted Doakes! "I own you." LOL!
There must be more to Gabriel too .. or was he a story-filler? lol I thought Lundy was the 'father-figure' to Debra!?

Lila .. calling Jimenez .. didn't see that one coming! Dexter's interview with Special Agent Lundy!?! Breaking into Rita's house!?!? DOAKES finding the blood slides!!! Anyone see the look on Debra's face when Lundy and Bautista confirmed it was someone within ... mark my words: SHE KNOWS. You gotta love some of the lines in this show .. "A gross, English titty vampire." LMAO!!!
The last ten minutes of this episode had me feeling like I had to pee I was so scared and tense! I can't wait for next week!!!

My predictions:
1. Lila will threaten Rita and the kids so Dexter will kill her in the end.
2. Although Doakes is a huge threat to Dexter, Dexter still cannot kill him if he follows the code of Harry. Somehow I see Doakes taking the fall for the Bay Harbor Butcher with the glass slides as evidence.
I like the way Deborah pissed off Lila when she came looking for Dexter at the station.

For awhile there I thought a show would never get its hooks into me the way The Soprano's did, but wow oh wow, Dexter is one amazing show. The scene where Dexter tells Lila that if she doesn't leave him alone she "will see the monster" made my hairs stand on end!

They don't play the preview for next weeks show right after anymore, at least where I am. I caught it later on. It showed the slides in a ziploc on Lundy's desk with Lundy and Doakes standing there and Dexter walking into the office. I kind of see Doakes taking the fall as well. This series is definitely a winner.

Hey Jeff: Good write-up in the New York Post about Season 2 to catch you up:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/11252007/tv/killer_dexter_723388.htm?page=1
When the bodies pile up, the odds of capture increase proportionately, elevating levels of stress and anxiety, and resulting in acts of carelessness that serve only to make the beleaguered killer's situation more precarious.
Such are the circumstances afflicting Dexter Morgan, title character of Showtime's "Dexter," as the series broadcasts its ninth episode and begins the final third of its 12-episode second season.
It's been an eventful eight episodes so far with the normally asocial Dexter (Michael C. Hall) juggling two love interests - Rita (Julie Benz), the demure mother of two who had been his steady girlfriend, and Lila (Jaime Murray of AMC's "Hu$tle"), the willowy, unstable "sponsor" from Narcotics Anonymous who he met while attending NA meetings under false pretenses.
At the same time, Dexter's also trying to steer clear of suspicion as the FBI and the Miami police (for which he works as a forensics tech) investigate the multiple murders which he himself committed, following the discovery of the spot underwater where he submerged his victims.
It's a far cry from Season One, when all Dexter had to worry about ...

Well folks, what is it gonna be with only two episodes left? Will Dexter pin it all on Doaks and make it stick or will Dex get hung with it? I think Doaks will get hung with it but escape and Dex will help him (it's the Harry way).
I think Harry made Dexter into his own personal Justice dept and Dexter is realizing this. Dexter is having a hard time dealing with Harry committing suicide because he thinks he is responsible for Harry's death after catching Dexter butchering some known murderer that eluded justice due to q tchniality.
What's gonna happen to Lila? I surely wouldn't like to be her when the "Dark Passenger" comes calling.

I devoured season 1 in two days (winter in Montreal means hibernation season) and am watching s2 ep2 as we speak. Each aspect of this guy (other than the serial killer part) hits closer and closer to home. His disconnect from the rest of the world, the way he 'fits in', the emotions and thought processes when he fails to fit in... the last episode he was standing on the ledge of a building, wanting to feel alive... I could relate, as I imagine alot of us who've felt the adrenaline rush of a major trauma have.
WHY CAN'T HE KILL THAT BIG DUDE???

Can we talk about the season finale yet? My buddy thinks that Dexter's dad played more of a role in cultivating a killer than what happened to Dexter as a child... even going so far as to set up his Mom. Harry immediately saw an oppurtunity to create a 'good' serial killer - one that could fix what Harry saw as the injustices of the world- and started training him from day one, leaving his brother on purpose to juxtapose the two. Then when he realized the Frankenstein he created after Dexter's first victim,he couldn't live with himself.
Lila, oh Lila. So sexy, such a shame...

I've read the same opinion as well on Harry on tv.com. I hope this doesn't mean the end of the flashbacks though ... I'm still in need of answers!
Deb came out much different in the final episode than she started out as .. like from a bumbling goofy idiot to the strong confident cop she was in the finale.
I don't think we've seen the last of Lundy either. He wasn't convinced.

Rita has made a major change from a demure, little walked on, colorless lady to strong, confident, (HOT), major player in Dex's life. I do like her better now than at first. Did I mention she is HOT?:)

I've not ready any posts because I don't want to spoil it.
But I'm on episode 11 of season 1 - all watched over last 3 days! - and I'm totally hooked.
I love Dexter's dark narrative, and the fact that the characters are quite multi-layered. At first I thought, typical, hard-nosed bitchy female boss but then you see her relationship with people other than Dexter's sister and she's different. It's well structured.
Best thing I've watched in ages. Cheers Christopher:D

But I'm on episode 11 of season 1 - I just watched episodes 9 and 10 day b4 yesterday. 11 and 12 should be watched in a day or 2. I've done it the bass-ackward way as I watched the last 5 episodes of Season 2 first... :DAs they were broadcast on Showtime. Yeap, Rita is a hottie.

Deb is cool not holding a grudge against Angel after getting bumped off the case. What's up with the weirdness between the Lt. and Angel?
lynnifer

I think Lt LaGuerta is looking for control over EVERYTHING and Angel is in the way and some'thing' to be 'dealt with'. I also thinks she doesn't feel she's part of the group anymore ...

I agree ... weird to introduce a new serial in the 2nd or 3rd episode ... who apparently likes skin! Reminds me of the skin suit in Silence of the Lambs .... eeesh. I remember reading a spoiler about this season with Jimmy Smits ... that relationship gets deeper/more dangerous/weirder.
I wonder if Rita will have the baby by seasons' end or will we have to wait? It's still a great show!

I'll place my bet right next to yours on thinking that Quinn is the skinner. Notice how he always seems to be lurking a few feet away from conversations, and then jumps in to say what a great job Deb is doing. It feels pretty insincere to me. I'm starting to think that the Jimmy Smit's character is going to break Dexter's heart, and he might need to be "restrained" in the usual Dexter fashion if he becomes a threat to Dexter's privacy.

Holy crap, what about the last episode of Dexter? I'm glad Miguel is out of the way, but now I expect his brother to be a major pain to the police department. My only criticism is Quinn being too much of a badass not to call for backup before they went poking around in the killer's backyard.
Anyone know how many episodes are left in the season?
Eileen
12-08-2008, 05:09 PM
Only one episode left this season. I can barely stand the suspense. I knew Miguel was going to have to be dealt with, but part of the genius of this show as far as I am concerned is showing that Dexter could not only kill him, but also that it took a big emotional toll on him because he had never trusted to that extent before.
doingtimeonmyass
12-08-2008, 05:22 PM
That sucks. I don't see how they are going to wrap everything up in just one episode. Maybe it will have a huge cliffhanger of an ending.
lynnifer
12-08-2008, 06:16 PM
What worries me more is Deb going to get all of Harry's CI interview stuff.
She's bound to ask Dexter about the female ... his mother ... Laura Moser ... which could get interesting. That actor is awesome because sometimes you can see the want and hesitation to tell the truth on his face and then at the last minute, he doesn't.
I see that as the cliffhanger this season.
But then, won't Maria suspect something when it was only her and Dexter who knew about Miguel. Convenient that he disappears ... too much so.
So much for the friend talk as he called Dexter a 'weird freak'. Ha - right decision to off him? Check!
Was anyone else seriously fooled by Dexter being kidnapped? I thought that was the skinner for sure! Never even entered my mind about a bachelor party!

I agree.
Except for being a serial killer Dexter is so cool. Watching him drag Trinity across the floor, into the kitchen, and slamming the door was intense.
...
In the Dexter novels, Deb finds out that Dexter is a serial killer and so the story goes. I'd like to see something like that play out in the show eventually, but don't think it's possible. If she's having such a hard time with the father's infidelity, she'd go insane with that information.

I've liked this season more than the last one, mostly because of John Lithgow. How uncomfortable was dinner last night? What a screwed up family!
Dexter has really been losing his 'professional' edge this season. He's making all these stupid mistakes and I find it unsettling and sometimes unbelievable. What happened to the calculating, impeccable serial killer we all knew and loved?

I have been thinking for a long time that although Rita doesn't meet "Harry's code" she would be nearly impossible to live with and that offing her might be tempting..... But then there are the kids, so I don't think Dexter would break his code (OK....but I am not giving it away) and do that. Maybe she just suffocates from her own need?

11-30-2009, 03:38 PM
One of the things that entralls me about this show is the complexity of Dexter's character. He has a set of rigid "ethics" despite being a killer. In many ways, although an entirely different story line, it is like Tony Soprano, who could do horrible things as part of his "business" but then come home and be a pretty remarkable father. It is so easy to write drama's in black or white, but Dexter, and everyone else in the show (with the possible exception of pathetic Rita) demonstrate all the gray areas that exist within us all.

I totally agree. What's the point of a water cooler show if you have to wait a year to talk about it? I feel kinda bad now for trash-talking Rita over the years.

That's funny. I do, too. Her character seemed so needy and nosey.
I get the feeling that we haven't heard the last of Elliot (was that
his name?), the guy who kissed Rita.

I feel the same way, guilty for disliking the Rita character as much as I did. On the other hand, she was sort of whiny and demanding of affection. Another mark of a well written show is when the audience ends up feeling so conflicted, and they definitely have done that to me.

A couple things bothered me about that episode.
1. Dexter being in Arthur's garage when the detectives arrived. That whole scene was kind of screwy. I think this will be a significant factor in the next season. My guess is Dexter will come clean with his sister and somehow she will come to terms with it and protect him.
2. Where did Dexter come from when the Mustang died and how did he bring Arthur back to the cargo container?
3. How could Arthur's family not have mentioned "Kyle Butler" when they were being removed from the house and Dexter standing a stone throw away?

HAHA! I do that, too. Poke holes in their plot. Glad I'm not the only
one.
I guess Dexter was hiding in his Mustang, since he knew that Arthur
would visit the body shop and he obviously wasn't following him.
This leads me to wonder when Arthur could've killed Rita; If he did.
It had to have been after Dexter put them in the cab, but before
he visited the body shop.
The reason for the car trouble seemed strange as well. When could
Dexter have pulled that part off of it without having been seen?

I read an interview with the producers after the finale and they specifically stated they do that so each person can fill in their own story in relation to their emotions, experiences, etc.
They can't give us everything!
As for the last part ... Dexter and Trinity 'got each other' but their timing was off ... Dexter had no idea about Rita ... and Trinity had no idea that Dexter was onto him, instead of mourning Rita and dealing with that.
The storyline with Kyle Butler and Trinity's family is not over. They'll re-visit that in Season 5 and will be dealing with the aftermath all next season ... according to the interview I read. The producers said Dexter may go completely mad ... or may stop killing in relation to what happened to Rita.
No matter what - the 'careful and neat monster' has had his first failure. Can't wait for next season.

I figured that it was Dexter who had tinkered with Arthur's mustang in such a way that it would go a few miles and then break down.

I just got caught up today with the most recent episode. This season I'm liking LaGuerta less, Debra more, Masuka a lot more, and mixed feelings about Quinn. Masuka IMO is great comic relief for the show. I'd like to see an episode that shows the inside of his house LOL. Quinn has become the new Doakes character.
This season has sure been exciting and suspenseful, however I'm finding the machete killing portion of it a little boring. As much as I like the show I find myself saying "yeah, right. Only on TV." quite a bit.
***Spoiler alert***
I'm wondering how they're going to wrap everything up in only one more episode. It isn't a stretch of the imagination to see Quinn getting investigated and going down after this last episode even though he is innocent. He's wearing evidence , there will be cell phone records showing tension between him and the PI, and he's at the scene of the crime. BTW, is it just me or does Quinn remind you of a young Ray Liotta? I guess the whole Kyle Butler thing is just going to fade away with the FBI which is a disappointment. I'm not sure what to think about Lumen or what's going happen to her by the end of the season… All in all though I'm enjoying this season.
I can see the show continuing for a long time and I'm hoping at some point Deb finally learns about Dexter although she would never be able to handle that. Ever since John Lithgow guest starred and now Julia Stiles, I'm thinking of other more famous actors I'd like to see star in Dexter. I'd like to see someone like Harvey Keitel or Benicio Del Toro play a villain role, but maybe that would be a bit much.

Me too, and I was left wondering if she actually knew who was behind the curtain or not. This is one of the best writen shows on TV, and every year it seems to get better and better. Quinn is going to be even more fascinating next season, as he knows he owes a very big debt of gratitude to Dexter, but I am not sure he understands the total picture yet.

doingtimeonmyass
12-13-2010, 04:09 PM
As much as I'd like to see that scenario play out, I don't think so and here's why… Deb would freak out emotionally and she was much too relaxed at the birthday party. Look at how obsessed she was in the first seasons over learning her father was having an affair. Dexter is the only family she has and I think that information would be too much for her to bear. That's hardly something you could get counseling for.
lynnifer
12-13-2010, 05:09 PM
So much foreshadowing .. the way she quoted Dexter towards the two from their earlier conversation last week, "Do you think some people deserve to die?" Dexter replied, "I think there's some people that don't deserve to live." Debra speaking to Quinn behind bars saying, "You think you know people but then you don't."
I must say I liked the original title of this episode better. Through a Looking Glass, Darkly ... which has much more connotation with it than the title they changed it to, The Big One.
I read earlier in the week where the verse comes from (not having picked up a Bible in years I wouldn't have got it):
1 Corinthians Verse 13:
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
Remember .. wishes are for children. lol

One thing that bothers me about the series is how it's only loosely based on one of the Dexter novels. I suppose it could be a good thing to keep the television series going, but it seems Cody and Astor were written off the show whereas in the novel Dexter becomes a mentor for them instead of focusing on a biological child named Harrison (Harry's son).

Watched the ep last night. Brian looks a little rounder in the face. Maybe he gained weight as a ghost lol. Anyways, I'm enjoying this season, but one thing I can't reconcile is the hunting victims, working and being a Dad at the same time. His kid comes off as a minor distraction in his life.
MikeC
11-09-2011, 12:02 PM
The show would be pretty boring if it centered on a single guy raising a kid. I think the main point of the kid is to see if Dexter can raise him without him turning into a monster. But, I agree that most of the time the kids seems like an afterthought since there is so much going on. Will be interesting to see if Debra makes it as a lieutenant. Glad they didn't write her out of the show when they broke up in real life - I love the way she talks - never knew there were so many uses for the word f##k.
lynnifer
11-09-2011, 06:12 PM
I love her lines in the show!
The kid is the catalyst ... will Dexter be good? Can he be good? Will he remain bad? How long can he survive if he remains bad? He can't walk the tightrope forever and the pressure (Harrison) is building. This will culminate in the series finale (1 more season after this, or so I've read).
I think Debra has suspicions at this point - I think we'll find out more by the end of the season now that she's in charge and can watch the department - and Dex.

I don't know if Deb could handle finding out the truth about Dexter. Remember what a big deal she made out of Harry having an affair? So refresh my memory… Is Dexter the only character who knows ITK was his brother?
So what do you guys think about Edward James Olmos's character? Wasn't he on the front page of the newspaper? How is he walking around without anybody noticing?
lynnifer

No - remember when Trinity got away, Deb approached Dexter at Trinity's house and told him the ITK was his birth-brother after she interviewed Harry's former affair? Dexter played along like he didn't know.
