OK, now I looked up all these new members to see who had stated positions on SCREA. These are the replacements for former Ayes. Not everybody has a stated position. On some, I went with their abortion stance. If anybody has more info, pls fill in the blanks!

I hope his works, I'm trying to attach the .xls files with the links I used for sources.

Maybe one could use those spreadsheets and add two more columns (Aye/Nay) to find out where the new Congress representatives stand on the reintroduction of the SCREA by sending the spreadsheet to each and every one of them and then concentrate on the one that ticks of Nay.

We're thinking along the same lines. I was wondering about dividing them up and calling them, ask them about re-introduction and where necessary, get a firm position re SCREA from them. When doing the research I noticed that all those pro-SCREA state it proudly. Most of the others are waffling and making us guess.

Leif

Good idea, and after that maybe send the complete spreadsheet with all the representatives stand on to the Nay ones and ask them again if they still stand by the Nay - and then after that go to the media/newspapers with the ones holding on to the Nay. And for that matter, go to the media with the ones that will not decide and/or answer upon request as well.

I wrote and asked, SCREA is one vote short of veto-proof in the Senate. My analysis confirmed this. One isn't bad...

In the House, assuming the 2 no-votes are nays, you have 167 Nay votes returning.
In the newly elected you have an estimated 18 nay votes coming in.
So that is roughly 185 nays, 250 ayes.
We need 291 to be veto-proof.

Leif
12-01-2006, 09:09 PM
Not bad at all, but it could be done then I guess, depends on how firm those Nay ones are, one has to find out and also find out about the ones who is undecided and smoke them out.

Beth, for no matter what reason you take on the esc challenge I will be happy. If Young finally wants action on this that is ok with me. I will be glad to forget about the flip flopping and lack of esc advocacy till now. Go for it. You have my best wishes

Let the calling begin. Let's dole out the phone numbers for each region in the country......

Below is a list I compiled of all the Representatives that voted against SCREA in 2006. I added their margin of victory in the last election, who replaced them where applicable (see asterisks), all their religions and noted if they were formerly in the medical profession.

Hopefully this will be useful for somebody. My goal was to identify softer targets to get the necessary 40 votes for this bill to be veto-proof in January. Frankly, folks, there aren't many easy targets here. One surprise-one of the 2 no-votes was a co-sponsor!

Look and see what you think.

I told a friend of mine who works for the Blue Dog Democrats that I was considering making campaign contributions to the candidates endorsed by the Blue Dog Coalition, but wouldn't give money to any candidate who opposed ESC.

It will be difficult to get through to new members. they are still getting settled in -- preparing to move in to their office, hiring staff, etc. -- and will be hit with dozens of issues right away. But with a vote on ESC coming quickly, we need to do our best to contact all new members. . Thank those who said they support ESC during the campaign and encourage those who did not to reconsider. They will have offices with phone numbers and (hopefully) email addresses on January 4th. But the best way to reach them is for voters in their districts to contact them back home when they set up their local offices.

Presbyterians:

Therefore, the 213th General Assembly (2001) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), affirms the use of fetal tissue and embryonic tissue for vital research. Our respect for life includes respect for the embryo and fetus, and we affirm that decisions about embryos and fetuses need to be made with responsibility. Therefore, we believe that the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and other faith groups should educate their members in making these very difficult ethical decisions. With careful regulation, we affirm the use of human stem cell tissue for research that may result in the restoring of health to those suffering from serious illness. We affirm our support for stem cell research, recognizing that this research moves to a new and challenging frontier. We recognize the need for continuing, informed public dialogue and equitable sharing of information of the results of stem cell research. It is only with such public dialogue and information sharing that our diverse society can build a foundation for responsible movement toward this frontier that offers enormous hope and challenge.

http://www.pcusa.org/ga213/business/OVT0150.htm

There are 14 Presbyterians on your list--their obstacle is not the teachings of their denomination, I guess. They were on board in 2001.

What about Episcopalians?

Episcopalians offered praise for the passage of rare bipartisan legislation expanding research of donated stem cells derived from human embryos after in vitro fertilization. The bill, H.R. 810, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005, passed by a vote of 238-194 and was co-sponsored 200 legislators, including 13 Episcopal members of Congress. http://www.episcopalchurch.org/3577_62380_ENG_HTM.htm

I count 15 of them; their church and majorities of their constituents support escr. Were ALL of them voting their consciences, or were some at least just getting their arms twisted by the leadership not to break ranks?

On to the Methodists:

Given the reality that most, if not all, of these excess embryos will be discarded—we believe that it is morally tolerable to use existing embryos for stem cell research purposes. This position is a matter of weighing the danger of further eroding the respect due to potential life against the possible, therapeutic benefits that are hoped for from such research. The same judgment of moral tolerability would apply to the use of embryos left from future reproductive efforts if a decision has been made not to introduce them into the womb. We articulate this position with an attitude of caution, not license. We reiterate our opposition to the creation of embryos for the sake of researchhttp://archives.umc.org/interior.asp?ptid=4&mid=6560

20 of those guys . . . you know, I don't actually think religious beliefs are what is in the way.

All but one or 2 of the one Kate mentions are Republican. I suspect supporting the President was a big factor. Many of them weren't re-elected by huge margins, I wonder if they are re-considering that loyalty?

That's the biggest thing we have going for us -- being in the minority takes away some of the pressure for Republicans to be team players, and with the President so unpopular there is reason to distance themselves from him. In fact, more than a couple of Republicans who won close races for re-election stressed their support for ESC as evidence of their independence from Bush. A good place to start looking for converts would be Republicans who won with less than 55% of the vote, because those are the members who need to start thinking about what they can do to show their independence in order to get re-elected.

That is exactly what happened in my district (WA 08). I like the strategy, and I think we should also be contacting people like Reichert (my rep) to make sure he doesn'f flip back again.

Ciro Rodriguez defeated Henry Bonilla in the runoff for the 23rd District of Texas. Rodriguez supported ESC when he was in Congress before (he voted against an amendment which would have limited funding for ESC research), so if he sticks with that position we have replaced a nay vote with an aye.

who support public funding for research that their church has said is sinful.

This ABCNEWS/Beliefnet poll, however, finds that people in these groups do not broadly oppose stem cell research. Catholics support it personally by a margin of 54 percent to 35 percent, and favor its federal funding by a slightly wider margin, 60 percent to 32 percent. (A small share of Catholics oppose the research personally, but support its funding as a matter of policy.)

Duly noted. Thnx. It's really hard to compile good info; a lot of faulty stuff out there!

I have a feeling the ones still supporting it publicly are diehard. This looks like a tough list to me!

It was just this week that Rodriguez won the runoff, Tuesday, so it's not surprising that the information you found was out of date.

Would anyone care to tell me how to get Doolittle's phone # or other contact info. He's gotten in by the smallest of margins and it makes sense to go after him.

Judging from this blurb on Chabot's website, I think he will be a difficult person to convince.

Any time you need such info, congress.org is a good source. They also have "Power Rankings" which (to me) are fascinating little analyses. They're not yet updated w/ the new member info tho. Will be interesting to see how long that takes...

“As we search for cures, it is important to maintain the utmost respect for human life,” Doolittle said. “Destroying a human embryo in an effort to better another life is utilitarian ethics no matter how you dress it up."

"...One of the state's most conservative House members, Doolittle is a founder of the right-wing Republican Study Committee and, as Secretary of the House Republican Conference, is the sixth-ranking member of the GOP establishment in the House.

Doolittle's normally safe seat has been hit hard by serious allegations of corruption. His wife, Julie, was hired by the campaign as a fundraising consultant and paid on commission, meaning that campaign contributions were effectively income for the Doolittle family. Doolittle has also been connected to Brent Wilkes and Mitchell Wade, the lobbyists who bribed Rep. Duke Cunningham, as well as Jack Abramoff, convicted of a variety of federal charges. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington named Doolittle one of the most corrupt members of Congress.

Doolittle's opponent was strongly endorsed by the Sacramento Bee, who pointed to Doolittle's record as a symbol of what's wrong in Washington - "all-too-cozy relations among lobbyists, politicians, their spouses and staffers. In some cases, these relationships edge into outright corruption." The Bee concluded, "Doolittle has a legacy of money and influence-peddling that has left the nation with unbalanced budgets, ballooning earmarks and a mess in Iraq."

Although supportive of Israel, Doolittle has a voting record closely in line with the Republican leadership and the religious right, especially on social issues like reproductive rights, stem cell research and church-state separation..."

Juke
Juke you could "remind" his staff of this:
Fact: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has no official position on the moment that human life begins. Further, the Church has not taken a position on the issue of embryonic stem-cell research.
http://www.lds.org/newsroom/mistakes/0,15331,3885-1-21582,00.html

And that many other Mormons support escr including that darling of the right Sen. Hatch.
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), a bishop in the Mormon Church, supports embryonic stem cell research despite his pro-life stance as well: "I do not believe that life begins in a Petri dish and, like many others, hope that these excess embryos can benefit mankind. ... For me, being pro-life means helping the living." [Los Angeles Times, 5/20/05]
