Mike is going to collect on his pension. This form is like a w4 form only it is called a W-4AP. We do want federal income tax withheld so we don't have to pay later, but, how many dependents should he put? On W4's we always put zero wo we would get a nice return, but I don't know about now??....

I think it's a W-4P form and you can fill it out using the worksheets or do as you usually do (with zero exemptions).

How about half of what you usually claim...that way they keep some so you dont have to pay and maybe you will get the rest back at the end of the year.

Head for the IRS web site or office and do a quick run through using round numbers on the 2005 1040 form. The tax tables should give you an idea of what you should "make" to break even. And yes, they also tax SSDI or a portion of it depending on total income. So good idea to do this with some thought.

I second SueP. The IRS website also has links to sites with software to guide you through, and it might even project the outcome using different scenarios. They did at tax time anyway, don't know about now...

Best of luck

Lol... That is the name of the form. It doesn't have anything to do with 4-AP the medicine!

if the whole point of of not putting an exemption down is to get a tax return at the end of the year, you're better off putting it in an interest-bearing savings account and actually making money on the money you're saving and get a bigger return
