The past few days, we've been loosing connection throogh a DSL modem that has been in place now for about 3+ years.
I know that's where the problem is because when I link to one of my neighbor's wifi connections through my Centrino based laptop, I have no problems.
Does anyone have any ideas about the life expectancy of one of these modems? It came from Earthlink when I upgraded from a dial up connection on their isp.
Thanks

Is your neighbour on Earthlink? are you in an apartment or seperate house? Ar you connecting via a routor? There's many reason's why you could be losing it, including age of your modem.

My favorite DSL killing discovery is electronic dimmers. They have a knack for wiping the DSL out when they are on. Some sort of RF generated by those that kills the DSL signal on the phone line

The dimmer theory is intriguing. My wife was complaining last night that everyone fails to turn off the dining room light - they just push down the dimmer - recently installed - instead of turning it off. It's just above the modem which resides in the basement.

I've been having a lot of problems with my DSL connection during the last month. I had a guy from Bellsouth(our ISP) come out and look at it. He said it looked fine and could be spyware eating the bandwitdth. Well I doubt it as I have two anti-spyware programs. It seems to fluctuate a lot at random. I still think our ISP has issues.

I have DSL and had to replace my modem last Friday and then again on Saturday. All is well since, I also lost my telephone, lost internet first and then telephone within a few hours. I noticed surfing slowed down prior to losing it all.

DSL technology is not the best out there when it comes to connectivit as a dsl connection can be affected by a number of reasons.

Does your phone line make any crackling sounds when you make or recieve a call? and have you checked your splitter coz normally thats the first thing to go as the modems are normally built to last much longer then 3 years provided your usb porn isint pushing currents beyond the modems expectations.

ask the service provider to do a line test which they can do remotely and see if the distortation in your line is within permissable limits.
