View Full Version : I'm sick of sneakers. What kind of shoes do you wear?

I'm tired of wearing sneakers all the time. My feet tend to swell during the day, so I'm afraid of causing damage. If I go a size bigger, my feet will look huge and most likely won't fit on my footplate. I was told to try diabetic shoes since they expand. I'd like to wear something stylish, like a Skecher. What do you guys wear?

When it comes to casual, I wear Vans loafers or Converse high tops, not real runners because I find those are really bulky and heavy and sometimes make transfers harder.

socks bug me b/c my toes are somewhat hypersensitive, so I go sockless... most often worn:

warm weather: Keen Newports (link (http://www.keenfootwear.com/pdp_page.cfm?productID=8))

cool weather: UGG Beacons (link (http://www.uggaustralia.com/ProductDetails.aspx?gID=m&categoryID=223&productID=5485&model=Beacon))

I have a couple pairs of running shoes that are a decade or so old & nicely broken in from pre-sci, but that's about it.

Jay, i was always told, "look after your feet". I wear a leather shoe from ALDO made in Italy. I believe a good solid sole is necessary. For me there is no alternative to leather.

I wear New Balance and Aldo shoes. They seems to be available in the wider sizes, which I've found is helpful.

http://www.drcomfortdpm.com/sc9w.htm -- the section (Shown best on the brown shoe in black) is stretchable, so the shoe expands to to accommodate swelling. They have all styles--dress, tennis shoes, boots--and they are light. Some of our law enforcement peeps wear the boots on the job.

I also wear the Keens, Birkenstocks (Footprints, Birki's, and Tatami) since they are adjustable for swelling.

i also got tired of new balance x-wide. all the pts at shepherds wore them an suggested them. they're great shoes but after a few years i wanted something else.

i kept tryin to wear nikes an reebok but kept gettin red marks. finally i tried on this pair of skechers an they fit great, didn't even have to get x-wide. i just got a half size bigger than what i used to wear. my foots are skinny.

I always wear Uggs (http://www.australianaura.com/) in the winter. I find them to be extremely cosy!

I usually wear just socks. When I transfer in and out of my car my shoes just keep getting pulled off. So the hell with it. Little kids will sometimes point at my feet, but I think parents understand--what's the point.

I once heard a woman tell her child, after he pointed out that I wasn't wearing shoes, "Because he doesn't need them, dear." I'll bet that little boy was wondering why HE had to wear them.

The wearing of just socks scares the hell out of me. Since I often use the toes of my shoes to push open doors, I can't imagine the damage to my feet if I didn't have protective shoes. I have New Balance and a couple of pairs I got at Timberland that work out well. What I need is a nice round toe space and the ability to swell along with my feet.

Here is a nice looking leather sandal, if sandals can be nice looking. I have a pair of black ones that I wear most of time.

I don't know if you are a man or a woman, but I like those new skechers with the criss-cross elastic on the top. They don't have laces and thery don't look like geriatric shoes. I'm wearing the size elevens and my feet actually look smaller to me. I do have skinny feet though, and I have to say if the straps were any tighter there might be a pressure issue. Try a pair. You can always return them if you don't like them.

I have these:

Almost always barfoot, but flip flops in the summer. Winter is always a problem, but I agree on no socks, they make shoes easier to put on and toes curl less often.

I like wearing the shoes I wore before my accident. I like looking at the worn out soles. Would love to step on a piece of gum or even some dog poop. If I ever I will never complain.......

I've worn sneakers for the whole 28 years of my SCI life. Recently I've been getting small sores or scabs but mainly just the imprint on my swollen feet of all the bad sewing that's done on the inside of them. When I was walking I was a 10 & 1/2. Then after SCI I went to an 11, then to an 11 & 1/2 then to a 12 then.... then I finally said screw it and bought a pair of these ugly walking shoes (http://www.amazon.com/Propet-Walker-Velcro-Sneaker-White/dp/B000BVZNZA/ref=sr_1_2/102-5901351-6468110?ie=UTF8&s=apparel&qid=1189939947&sr=8-2) from Amazon for $50 in size 13 and all is well with the world! I even joke about them being my "dress shoes"... they are black and a bit shiney! I need to move my front wheelchair casters back an inch to make turning easier but my feet don't get anymore of those cheap Chinese made (or wherever Nike, Reebok, British Knights etc. are having them made at now... you know, the cheapest labor force available on the planet) sewing or sharp cloth stich lines on them. The insides of these walking shoes are really smooth. And I never thought that I'd like velcro "ties" but they are so easy to use.... 2 seconds and they're on. I'm sold on velcro now... no more lace tying for me.

All dressed up and nowhere to go! :)

Good luck.

Bob.

I can only wear Birkenstocks and Crocks. My feet and ankles swell extremely bad and all shoes leave bad marks and pressure sores. Don't know what I'll do when these go out of style?!?

I wear black sox to work/whenever I wear long pants, and white sox when wearing shorts. I haven't put on a pair of shoes since 1993. Cutting back on sodium and getting my feet up 8 hours a night cuts the swelling tremendously for me.

I wear Ugg Boots (http://www.whooga.com/ugg.asp?p=wpa-375279) just about all year round.. Yes I'm a major dag
Those tall ones (mine are chocolate) are great in the winter, my feet and calves get so so cold but when I put these on they keep my feet warm. Since its summer (almost) I'm wearing all my wedges, no brand in particular just whatever goes with what I'm wearing.

My favorite "sneakers" to wear are etnies. Love em! I have three pairs. I also wear tall boots with zippers on the side so they slide on easier. I have a pair of Harley boots that run snug at first, but have sensed stretched to a comfortable fit and a pair of tall brown boots. I found with wearing tall boots (just below the knee) my feet were never swollen. They don't swell with my etnies on either. I used to have major problems with swelling, but that has gone away for the last 5-6 years.

Next year I will be getting a pair of UGGS, but not until winter. My podiatrist actually recommended that if I wear shoes to wear UGGS or CROCS.

Those are just too cute Rose!

Where did you get them?

My big gripe is it takes 8 screws to change the footrest heights!
My attendants can't get on the floor & change them so I can wear different heights of shoes.

So everything I buy has to be the same. :(

I wear these (http://www.skechers.com/catalog/browse.do?function=displayProductList&gender=M&catId=2&index=6&viewAll=false&sort=newest&prodId=31282&styleCode=60562#) to work and almost everywhere else.

I occasionally wear black All-Stars high tops, which incidentally for any A/B SCUBA divers, make great dive booties.

When I wear shorts I usually wear some brown leather mandals.

I still sometimes wear the klunky black Lugz boots I was wearing when I crashed my Suzuki and got paralyzed. There's a nice big scuff on one from the crash that I wear like a badge. I even polish them (what can I say, I'm a veteran). They are one of the last pairs I have with worn treads. Those and the Bostonian Classic wingtips which are holding up very well since I stopped treading on those leather soles.

I am also stuck in the 90's; I think Dr. Martens are as cool as it gets!

I like shoes...

Old school and damned, good looking shoes. Over the years, some Jordans have gotten down-right weird! There is no need for shiny, vinyl on my court shoes. I do not understand some of the shoes I've seen in stores in the past decade.

I only wear Born and Rieker shoes. They are always comfortable and well made.

The last pair of Josef Seibel shoes I bought werent worth the money. They fell apart the second time I wore them. The store I bought them at wouldnt exchange them for another pair that was not defective. The salesmen knew me by name. The shoes cost me 120.00, but in the end they cost the store my very good business permanently.

I usually just wear my cowboy boots now though.

An old post, but what the hey. :) I'm the same - no way would I just wear socks. I'd break a toe, or something.

To those that do wear socks and say what's the point in wearing shoes - um, looking smart? If I saw someone out in just socks, I'd think they didn't care about their appearance.

I still wear a custom made set of moccasins that I got a decade ago. Find a good maker for these if your interested. There are all kinds of styles and they are soft, plus easy to put on. A thick leather toe will withstand some damage as well.

Lately I have been thinking of getting some car racing shoes. They look soft and would be fire proof!

They look good, but the leather/suede actually tends to be a bit stiff and they are made to fit rather closely.

I need shoes to transfer, otherwise my foot slips, and if I do go without shoes, I find my feet wont stay on the footrest.

As well as those sketchers posted above, there are a lot of sneakers out this spring that are slip on /ballet type but with an extra strap. I just bought these:

http://www.payless.com/Images/300x300/060354_1_300x300.jpg

They stay on pretty well, I just have to be careful not to catch the back of the heel on my foorplate, or the bottom of the car when transferring, or I will knock them off.

I with you there. I need to wear shoes. Socks alone make it hard to transfer, and I tend to "Lead with my toes" so to speak when wheeling - pushing doors open and such. If I am barefoot for some reason, I have to be careful that I don't smash a toe on the corners or door frames.

(Really goes against the grain for me, I was ALWAYS barefoot inside, and wore the least amount of shoes outside as possible. Sandles if it was remotely warm enough.)

eta, ... just scrolled up, and realized I already said most of this. lol. thought it sounded familar as I was typing!
