Hi,
It is true that oral consumption of oxybutinin will produce side effects like dry mouth, constipation etc. Direct bladder instillation with the same (dosage?) is recommended as an alternative. Is it absolutely free of any unpleasant side effects (particularly constipation)? Then why can't we straight away go in for bladder instillation? What are the disadvantages of this method? Please explain.

as soon as it is instilled, it immediately becomes diluted as urine accumulates in the bladder. it then gets removed at next cath.

therefore for some, its benefit isn't of long enough duration

The bladder instillation is a fairly new approach to using oxybutynin (Ditropan). I haven't had any experience with it, so can't address this question very well. crag's answer about dilution seems quite reasonable, but we'll wait and see what other folks have to say about this.
