As far as I can make out and the GP that read from the findings, everything looks alright. I will try and put it in as few words as possible but would like a little more interpretation from you. First, FYI, Jess is C7, with a plate in front, not in the back but had chip of bone removed in the back of his neck during the surgery. "The C2345 and T12 bodies appear normal limits. C67 are fused, hardware supporting C67 bodies, no significant disc inner space narrowing or significant alignment abnormality. Abnormal cord signal seen at C67 with large area of bright signal on T1 and fluid signal on T2 suggesting encephalomalacia of the cord for 10.78 mm with a small amount of cord seen anteriorly and posterior to this large area of central encephalomalacia. Above the level no sign of syrinx. Cord volume from C5 up to brain appears WNL's as does cord signal above this area of encephalomalacia at the C67.
Disc inner spaces........C23 normal. C34 demonstrates a right paracentral disc osteophytic hard appearing disc with right sided neural foraminal narrowing and no canal stenosis. C45 demonstrates a right sided spur in the paracentral nerve foraminal area with hard disc appearance and right neural foraminal narrowing of a wide degree. C56 level demonstrates a broad based disc protrusion but no canal or neural foramen narrowing is seen at C56. C67 levels appear fused with metallic defects probably anteriorly and centrally within the C67 bodies.f Posterior laminectory defect seen at C7. C7-T1 no sign of any canal or neural foraminal narrowing.T23 demonstrates a right para central nerve foraminal disc protrusion. There is some effacement of the anterior thecal sac at the C23 level secondary to the protrusion." I dont understand the word "encephalomalacia" and our Dr. just went over it as if it wasnt a concern. Does this report sound ok, or is there something we should be asking questions about here?

I seem to only find definitions of encephalomalacia that pertain to the brain, not the spinal cord. Is this actually a fluid filled cyst, in other words?? If so, what can be done?

JMom, the MRI suggests that Jesse's spinal cord above the injury site is fine (which is the thing that one wants to make sure of) and the rest appears to be a result of the injury. The injury is at C6/7. Regarding the area of abnormal signals (resulting probably from degeneration of spinal tracts. The word enecephalomalacia is just a fancy word for the presence of some degenerative abnormalities and you should not worry about it. One expects this in a spinal cord injury and Jesse has had spinal cord injury. The MRI does not suggest the need for any action. Wise.
