Washington, DC (AHN) - Michigan University researchers have discovered the secret behind the human egg's capability to convert into another life. They reported their findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The scientists believe that they have found genes that are exclusively found in human eggs. The finding opens up avenues for looking into genetic mechanisms involved in these genes, related to infertility and degenerative diseases.Jose Cibelli, MSU professor of physiology and animal science told Asia News International, "What's in the egg to have that power?...Some of those genes are responsible for the magic trick that the egg has. This paper takes a peek at what genes are in the egg waiting to make these changes."Cibelli added that his aim was to grow stem cells without the use of fertilized embryos, which is controversial. The study used unfertilized eggs from women undergoing fertility treatment in a clinic in Santiago, Chile.
