In the post by antiquity a few years ago, the article mentioned a drug that would take out the side effects of opiate use, such as constipation. Dr Richard Penn( my neurosurgeon)is a colleague of this man at the Univ. of Chicago. I asked him about how far along is this drug. He said it is under the last review for the FDA and should be out by next year(2007). He said it will sell millions.
Damn I hope so . personally I can't take opiods due to stomach and bowel problems associated with opiates.

I find that a diet rich enough in fiber and raw fruit/vegies will counter the use one opiate type pain pill daily, well enough to facilitate one bm daily. Since the daily BM is all I want and the fruit/veg rich diet gives me best energy, it's all good.:)

I agree with you ,but
For a person who needs multiple pain meds a day, no matter how good your diet is, you more likely than not are going to have problems. Methylnaltrexone will provide help in solving these. I would love to be drug free but for me at least that is not feasible and my body craves relief.

Shame you can't get on with opiates. they work well for me.
Although they tie you down.
I'm detoxing from them now.

I have a friend who was on Methadone for years. After a year or two of not hearing from him I finally called a few months back and he sounded like he was on death's doorstep. Not because of the Methadone (as far as I know) but from Hep C and lots of assorted opiates, many with acetaminophen, (eating at his liver) for his severe back pain. He told me they offer Methadone with or without "built-in" or added laxatives just for this purpose.

I guess the tough part for us who are SCI'd would be figuring out the correct dosage of laxative so we wouldn't become constipated or worse, have a constant bad case of diarrhea. Life's a freakin' balancing act.

I tried one of his 20mgs pills (not the liquid form, he was doing 120 plus mgs per day) but didn't like the feeling and couldn't sleep for 2 days.... give me a handful of oxycodone instead for a 3 day mini-vacation.

Opiates, opiates, opiates. I love them.

They block 99.9% of my pain, kill deppresion & block unwanted thoughts and are the only thing that works for me wether its (unfortunatly heroin...in the past), Methadone, Oxycontin or Subutex etc. However, the week or so it takes to come off them is a complete nightmare. I'm just finishing now as I'm off to Thailand for 3 months and taking 4.5 litres of Methadone dosn't sound too clever (if at all I could).

If its just a constipatoin issue, I'd take a sachet of Movicol a day and use 1 microlax when requied. It only took a week or so for me to get some sort of rythym going.

Wonder what the opiums like in Asia ?

So.............your looking for someone to send you some of their drugs or
looking for a place to obtain them illegally? :nono:

You might want to check with social services to see what avenues are available to you. Either way, you will have to see a doctor for a prescription.
