View Full Version : Have too much to do, will this work?
I’ve been up and down the pain route and have been pretty much been able to handle it. However the last few weeks it has lasted longer and more severe (knock ur d*ck in the dirt) than it ever has been before.
Have been on and off the narcotics (currently off) ate 50mg of Valium and still feel like whimpering. Was in hospital for an UTI and took the Valium IV and it killed the pain almost instantly. Started on Valium in rehab after spasm up and over the hospital rails. Doc didn’t think there was any thing by mouth that equaled IV Valium.
My question is if I put a patch of fentanyl directly where it hurts will it make a difference than having it elsewhere? Lower back, c6 no motor or sensory below my level of injury, uh huh.

Hi Cris,
If you were in the hospital for a UTI they probably gave you a big dose of a broad-spectrum antibiotic either by a shot in the muscle or by IV. That could account for the fast decrease in your pain. I can take a Cipro orally and within 6 hours my urine starts to clear up and the pain subsides just as fast. So intramuscularly or IV would work much faster than orally perhaps accounting for the fast pain reduction.
Where is your pain located at?

I doubt it but ya never know. How fast do you need the pain to go away? I would think that within an hour (maybe 2?) the patch is gonna be as effective as it's gonna get. Where do you find a doctor that so easily prescribes fentanyl patches? I had to almost beg my pain doctor for 5mg - 4 times a day of Valium!
Have you ruled out neuropathic pain by trying Neurontin (gabapentin) or similar drugs. Opioids don't touch neuropathetic pain... they just get ya high or take away other or "normal" types of pain.

My thoughts exactly, although I have had doctor prescribe it.
Doctors love codeine but it cause other problems.
Be careful with the Fentanyl that's truly powerful stuff.
Now the Valium has worked well for me , but it took a lot of trying other things before my doctor saw the light.
The "mothers little helper" reputation of the 1960's doesn't help.
Nor does the fact that the drug companies have little interest to sell a drug that's dirt cheap.
So no "Freebies" for writing scrips for Valium, but damn if it doesn't work for me.
Regards,
Alan

The drug companies hate those good ol' drugs that have become generic and are cheap. My pharmacy just raised the price of gabapentin $4.00 in a month. But it's still only $32 for 150 - 300mg capsules. And 120 - 5mg diazepam pills only cost $8! Medicare Part D (the great new prescription drug plan that costs me more money each month... doesn't save me a dime!) doesn't cover Valium type drugs (benzodiazepine family) but no big deal. I can afford 8 bucks a month.
I started on diazepam because at first the gabapentin (Neurontin) was driving me crazy. But my doctor wouldn't prescribe it for that reason so I complained about muscle spasms so she reluctantly prescribed it. I also told her that it helped with the pain so she could justify it in her records. She's a SCI rehab and pain specialist.
I'm high-strung (Thoroughbred - must have been my grandfather marrying his first cousin, dear ol' grandmom!) and "nervous" anyway. But I even keep the ringers in the "ON" position on my phones now that I've reduced my pain and am calmed down. I feel normal now.
When I first had my liver tested the numbers were a bit high. 49? I saw my doctor yesterday and my number(s) are completely normal. I'll drink to that! I've stopped drinking except for maybe twice a month but only a 6-8 pack and a few shots of whiskey. And on those days I don't take any prescription drugs at all. The alcohol keeps the pain at bay. Never mix, never worry. Except beer with an ocassional shot!
Whatever works.
The only reason I go to the hospital is from AD caused by an UTI. They usually hit me with gentamycin and another antibiotic. Within (usually) 24 the doctor (urologist) when the AD has settled down, still orders my ‘regular meds” one which is 20mg Valium and it came out oral or IV. Tried the IV, and wolah.
My doc (neurologist) and I have spent a lot of time trying to figure it out. He will give me anything I want, we have taken down Grays Anatomy and the PDR and went through them together.
Last culture I took in he called me on Saturday morning and again on Tuesday morning and I never asked him to, just to see how I was. If you don’t have a good relationship with your doctor, find another.
Nuerotin up to 2500 mg, no help.

That's still a pretty low dose of Neurontin when it's being used for neuropathic pain.
