My doctor recently switched me to Lyrica from Neurontin/gabapentin. At first, it was great. That mind-numbing buzzing/stinging/just been electrocuted feeling was deadened to a quiet roar. First real relief in 13 years.
However, I realized I was major league depressed. I don't do depression. Granted, I was approaching the 13th anniversary of this SCI madness, but this was kicking my ass. It wasn't situational. I couldn't attribute it to anything. The depression just was. I also gained humongo seemingly overnight weight. I tripped over that.
I'm back on Neurontin/gabapentin and off the Lyrica. The insane depression has lifted and the weight gain has not only stopped, it's slowly reversing itself.
So, what's up with Lyrica and my body? With Lyrica I was depressed to the point of looking forward to night because it meant I could go to sleep. I wasn't thinking suicide, but I can see how I could have gotten to those thoughts had I let it continue and not reviewed any changes in life, medication, situation, etc.
SCI Nurse, how often does this happen with Lyrica?
sucks that you had a shitty ride  but great for you that it's fixed! :applaud:

Cali, it sucked and I was freaked out because I don't do depressed. The depression lifted the more days I had away from my last dose of Lyrica.
Kewl avatar, btw. Your new hair rox!
*bows* thanks! i finally got it fixed, my last haircut was horrible.
well i think i've been mildly depressed once or twice in my whole life. as for stressed and anxious, PLENTY of times.

Hi,
Although the Lyrica website does not mention depression, thre hvae been some reports in a few carecure threads such as :
http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/showthread.php?t=59290
I am interested to hear what others on lyrica have to say.

I took Lyrica for a while and got no better benefits then from Neurontin. I have primarily burning pain in my legs and feet. I found the comment re: weight gain interesting as I have had the same experience with Neurontin. If you check some of the other threads on Neurontin you will find this pretty common. Didn't find any greater degree of depression then before although comparing the price to Gabapentin, that's enough to depress anyone.

I've been on lycira 50mg 3x for a little over a month. I've experienced some weight gain but not enough to worry about b/c I had lossed alot of weight in previous months due to appetite loss. Also, my doc put me on Lexapro at the same time as the Lycira so any depression was at least lessened. I have had an increase in depression (i.e. wanting to sleep excessive amounts) the last week or so but I contribute it to my husband not being home much due to wheat harvest. It has also been pretty HOT lately so I can't be outside until late evening. Hopefully my depression will lift when Matt gets some more time at home and I can go outside some more.:)
I've been on Lyrica for little over a month. Other than my normal depression, I have not noticed any change. I seem to be occasionally short of breath but that's abiout it.
This drug has really helped me in dealing with my severe stomach "cramps". Decreases the pain from 100 to about 30-40% much more manageable. Hopefully some day I'll figure out the root cause of these cramps, until then I'll stay on Lyrica.

I've been on this stuff for a couple months now. It seems to work just as well as the Neurontin without the cloudy head. My only big complaint is dehydration. My lips have been chapped constantly and my skin has definitely been drier.
LaMemChose I'm curious, were you able to get the Lyrica that was not in the capsules. My pharmacist said they were not available. I have also been having similar side effects that you mentioned.

Hey, Bspill. The Lyrica I took was in little, tiny, white capsules. Hope your side fx dissipate soon. Mem
