View Full Version : Problems Opening files
Recently I have started having problems opening files, primarily my excel and word files. They open but take forever. I have run anti spyware files,ie ad-Aware, norton win doctor and any other applications I could think of to resolve the problem with no results. Any ideas?

You could clean up your hard drive and give it a defrag. Is your hard drive starting to get full? When it gets around 85% full it's time to clean out a lot of old unnecessary stuff or buy a new hard drive and slave the old one up to it. Once you slave a hard drive up you won't be able to access anything on the Desktop (so move that stuff to a folder elsewhere) and the programs that are installed on it will no longer work either. They'd need to be uninstalled/removed from the Add/Remove feature in the Control Panel and reinstalled. Either on the new drive (C:\) or most programs can be reinstalled on the slave drive and run fine. But most utilities like anti-virus programs etc you want installed to their default location on C:\.
Wouldn't hurt to run a scan disk (pre-XP) or chkdsk (XP) on your hard drive. Better yet, use the utility that you can download from your hard drive manufacturer's website. You'll need to know the make and model number of your hard drive.
Or you could have a bunch of stuff running in the background or malware crap that Norton and Ad-Aware isn't finding and removing. Adding another 256 or 512MBs of memory (RAM) would probably help too. Perhaps help a lot.
What are your system specs? CPU speed, video card and type and amount of system memory?
That's all I can think of off hand.

you can also repair your whole office application
a copy of your office packet is located in the directory C:\MSOCache
you can reinstall it from there :)
just when it asks you what to do choose repair instead of remove or reinstall.
this solution has a great chance to help you solve your problem and in this way you won't loose any of your setings
cheers,
I do not have the file or folder c:\msocache on my computer. I am currently running Microsoft Office 2000 premium. Have had no problems since I purchased the package until now.

YHA.. Sounds more of a trying to find everything/space issue then spyware. I'd clean up temp files, most people have a few 100 megs og them, and de-frag. This should speed you up. Also how much RAM you have. in 2000, 512 was truckloads... now it minimum, so ur new programs could be eating it all up.
I found my problem. Inadvertantly I had changed my Norton anti virus software to scan Microsoft Office files. Thought this might help others with similiar problem.
Thanks for help and suggestions.

Yha..... Norton would do it. But doing things such as more RAM and de-fraging would allow you to use the anti-virus.
