I am interested in search engines. Is there a top 10? Are any of them in categories for certain uses? I understand what they’re used for but I would like to know what is currently the best, popular in use today!:)

personaly I prefer google. I don't know if there is a search engine rating system or site that has rated search engines in diffrent catagories to see what is better for what kind of searches. Would be interesting to have such a list or a catagory for what types of search engines work better for what kinds of searches one performs.

Google seems to be on the top of the heap, followed by Yahoo and then Dog pile. All the others seem to have faded away. I used to have at least 6, but have since even forgotten their names. I think there was Northernlight and Netscape and Excite and some others. Google just put them all out of business I guess.

I have found topics that google missed and msn found. If it's important use 2, such as google and Yahoo. Usually i just use Google.

According to RoxnRolz, Dogpile uses several search engines togother, so this would eliminate missing topics, that google would miss and that msn would find. Follow me?

Is my above comment to Patonb correct, MR.Roxnrolz? Is this what i'm understanding?

I have never used MSN for a search. I mostly use Goggle and sometimes Yahoo. I recently heard about Dogpile.com when I was searching for some particular software at Major Geeks.com. The site had Dogpile advertised as you described, so I added it to my favorites list to search for things perhaps Google misses. It seems to work pretty well.

P.S. you can reserve the "Mr." for grown-ups... It's just all the "rocks over which I rolls"

Yes, DogPile is a meta-search engine. In other words, it runs your search terms through multiple search engines. MetaCrawler, SurfWax and Copernic are other examples.

Here's a nice article from UC Berkeley on what a meta-search engine does: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/MetaSearch.html

I usually use Vivissimo, as it also sorts the hits into categories that are sometimes helpful.
