1. Do you have all your windows updates downloaded and installed, primarily service pack 2?
2. If you are using a USB mouse or keyboard (I think primarily if you use a USB mouse) find an USB to PS/2 addapter and plug your mouse and our keyboard into the PS/2 port and reboot.
3. This sometimes applies to USB wired but if you are using a wireless mouse and or keyboard look in msconfig and see if the dvdlauncher is checked to run and uncheck it. Here is a link specificaly for this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/911895/en-us
4. If you have installed a 3rd party screensaver try un-installing it reboot and then install it and reboot once again.

Today's monitors really lack a need for a screen saver as they don't suffer the old CRT problem of image burnins. Todays flat pannel LCD monitors since they are LCD also will not suffer the old problem of pixels getting locked into a specific color any more. You can leave your monitor on with the brightest image on the display for the life of the computer and suffer no damage like they used too, a CRT might but the ods are in its favor to not get damaged. On desktop PC's the screen saver is a waste of RAM and CPU load and on laptops just run down your battery. I hope the information helped as there really isn't any thing in the windows knowledge base regarding this issue other then what I linked too. If not I can always google some more. :)

Go into your control panel and check the settings under display for screensaver. Sometimes they get turned off or changed for some reason.
