View Full Version : Help: I'm being robbed by napster.

How do I stop Napster acct. fraud. I'm ready to climb the walls over the way Napster has led me down the garden path and continued billing my bank account for services I terminated almost before they had begun.

Six or more months ago I opened accounts with both emusic and napster using their "free 30 trial" deals which are really $10 a month minimal service deals. Within a few hours of trying each it bacame clear that neither offered any music I was interested in. I closed my emusic account and tried to close my napster account.

I had gone through all the fields recquired to close my account when I was offered a final reduced rate deal which I refused. I then surfed to another site believing the napster accont closed. A month later it became clear that napster was still debiting my bank account through my credic card info for the basic $10 rate per month.

I phoned my bank and challenged the debit and was provisionally credited the amount charged. A month later I was charged for the ten bucks that had been provisionally credited plus another monthly napster charge. My bank's representative informed me that napster had provided proof of my having a valid account with them.

I went back to my napster account and went through all the cancellation field recquirements until I had a screen come up informing me that I had sucessfully cancelled my account.

Now, all these month later, I am still being billed by napster as they have my credit card infromation and have apparently falsely indicated that my desired cancellation had been effected. I have never used any napster services.

I just finished a short google search for infromation on "napster account fraud" and a few other searches, trying to find information of other victims of this "scam" by napster, and failed to bring up anything relevent.

I am considering informing my bank of the situation and also informing them that any future debits to my account by napster will be considered reason for me to close my account with them. This is a step I don't want to take as I am otherwise pleased with the services my bank has been providing me.

Help!:(

Hard way : print out the cancellation notice, send it to the credit card company, and complain that you can't get them to cancel your account.

Easy way: Cancel your credit card.

Third way : find a phone number, and when you verbally cancel your account, make sure to record who you were talking with and when.

Thanks, I'll use the second suggestion as it's simplest all around.

Hi again Jukespin,

Within a few hours of trying each it became clear that neither offered any music I was interested in.

Exactly what music were you trying to download from Napster? Name of the band or artist, title of album, year it was released and what music genre? In regards to my post in your other thread (AOL SNAFU) I'll see if it's available for free at the newsgroups.

Now that's something I've done in the past and should have thought of.

napster must have taken a line from AOL , no matter how many times the customer calls to cancel, do not cancel them.
AOL used to be horrible you would call to cancel and they would refuse to cancel until they read you a sales pitch for more service, even while you would tell them you didn't want to hear their 20 minute filibuster sale pitch. after all that they would still bill you.

OK, now everyone can get ready for a good laugh. I had started out looking for just one song which I'd heard on the soundtrack of the farcical Andrew Dice Clay & Teri Hatcher romance "Brain Smasher...a Love Story".

It's: "YOU ARE THE ONE"
Written and Performed by Madelynn Von Ritz
Published by Kronen Musikverlag / Michael Holm K.G. / Heart Island Music

My goggle searches made it pretty clear that this is a song that many have searched for without much luck. Failure to find it led me to the trial runs of emusic and napster.

Once into these supposed giants of the music downloading webworld, I started seeking lots of other artists (without any luck) I like but I'll forgo that for now.

I don't know if you can find "YOU ARE THE ONE" but can still recall the haunting sound of its lyrics. The movie, panned almost universally by critics, really isn't that bad and Teri Hatcher is eye-candy of the sweetest variety.:agog::p:):):applaud::D

Hi Jukespin,

Wow, that's gonna be a toughie. There's a "Soundtrack" newsgroup that I'll "look" in. If it isn't there I'll post a "Request". But that could be a "Stump the Band" stumper!

I don't think there was a soundtrack CD ever released. Not to give up so soon but the VHS tape is $8.99 at Amazon!!!! However.... there was a complaint that the video quality wasn't up to par. Hopefully the audio is okay. It was recorded in Dolby 2.0. And it's not on DVD.... at least at Amazon.
Genres: Action, Comedy

Tagline: Rescue a super-model. Battle killer ninjas. Save the world. No problem!!

Plot Synopsis: Sam Crain, a professional model, is asked by her sister to smuggle a package from Europe to Portland Oregon, where discovers that her sister is battling Chinese Shaolin Monks (not ninjas!). Fleeing the monks, Sam unwittingly involves Ed "Brainsmasher" Molloy, a nightclub bouncer.

EDIT:

I searched the newsgroups and the Internet for it and can't find it. As I said, there doesn't seem to be a soundtrack available.

Here are the all the song titles from the movie... I think:

I found a couple other people on the Internet who were looking for that song.... so you're not alone. It appears as though Madelynn Von Ritz has kinda gone underground. I think she had a website but it's down now. She may be a part-time wedding planner and/or make-up artist too. :) If it's the same Madelynn Von Ritz.

Mike & the Mechanics has a song entitled "You Are The One". Here are the lyrics... maybe they'll ring a bell if it's the same song. I doubt it though. I downloaded the mp3. If it's the same song and you want it, I can upload it for you.
Time from the man, who will live while he can, on his own
Pass by the dream, it’s movie you’ve seen once before
Tears in the rain, as you wave at the plane
As it climbs through the clouds, to the sun

You are the one, oh, you are the one
You make it all worthwhile, you make it all worthwhile
You are the one, oh, you are the one
You make it all worthwhile, you make it all worthwhile
I see your picture smiling back at me
But I’m afraid of the future, I’m afraid you won’t see

Look for the slave, is he trying to wave or to drown?
There at the start, he’ll be there when your heart touches down
Drawn to the pain, like a moth to a flame
As he climbs through the clouds, to the sun

You are the one, oh, you are the one
You make it all worthwhile, you make it all worthwhile
You are the one (you are the one)
Oh, you are the one (you’re the only one)
You make it all worthwhile (you make it all worthwhile)
You make it all worthwhile
I see your picture smiling back at me
But I’m afraid of the future, I’m afraid you won’t see

If you really want the song you'll probably need to get the VHS tape and extract it through your computer's soundcard. Or you may even need a video capture card (and software) and extract it after you convert it into AVI or MPG.

It's on DVD in Australia but I don't know if that format (PAL) will work on US DVD players???

I'll look into Heart Island Music later and see what they're up to.

Big pain in the ass! Good luck.

Whoa, enough! It was a long time ago and I've only a vague recolection. What worked most about the movie (other than the Von Ritz song) was the wet night streets of Portland, Oregon. That and Teri Hatcher, of course.

Thanks for making what was obviously a considerable effort to find the Von Ritz song but it's not really that important to me to have it.

If it's alright with you, I'll get up a short list of artists and/or albums I'm looking for that you might help me track down on the net?

Thanks again for the effort.

What's this business of having to depend on a guy who's blatantly ripping you off for your food shopping? I thought, way back when we were getting acquainted over my jail-time story:D, that you made a comment that indicated you had a vehicle. Not so? No county transit meeting ADA recquirements that you could use to get to a market?

I'm not asking to try to derail my appreciation of what you did here; I'm just really currious.

Hi Jukespin,

Dave the Neighbor is a real trip. He just can't get off the crack and coke long enough to get his life straightened out. I haven't seen him in a few weeks... his parents FINALLY gave him the boot! I usually get most of the money back from him in lawn mowing detail or working around here doing the stuff that I can't. But after he has my card for an hour or two and I go online to check my bank balance I always hold my breath. So far so good... he's only nickel and diming me!

I didn't say that I had a car. I did have one ('79 Chrysler LaBaron) with hand controls for about 5 years post SCI but as soon as it died I really couldn't afford another one. Well, I could afford another car, it's the insurance and upkeep that's the hassle. I cried the day I sold it for $200 as I came to the realization that I probably wouldn't be getting another one anytime soon. I always had a car or two and of course a motorcycle pre-SCI so that was a bellwether into my future as a poor gimp. It was a real piece of junk after I drove it around for 5 years! A big part of my freedom was dragged away on the back of that tow truck. Boohoo.

The only mention I made about a car in the imfamous "Fart" thread was:

You would have shown the restaurant owner/manager a thing or two by taking him to small claims court and wheeling away with 5K of his money. You could've bought yourself an inexpensive car instead of bellyaching to me about your transportation woes. Or is the small claims court also controlled by this all-powerful restaurant owner/manager? He must have the best free donuts in town if he has the police and their cohorts at his beckon call!

:) :) :) :)

Sure, I'm an Internet sleuther. My only problem is that I have a 25MB upload limit with Comcast but really only may have 10MBs of available space. So I'd only be able to upload 2 tracks at a time. If you change over to Worldnet and get the newgroups (the alt.binary ones) you'll be impressed with all the music (and porno) there. If you have broadband you can be listening to the first mp3 on a particular CD that you want to hear and by the time you're done listening to it, the rest of CD is already on your hard drive. Well, maybe after the first 2 songs. And there's just so much there. Once in awhile, when I get drunk (and take my ritual one toke on a doober!) and get in the music crankin' mood, I'll go there and find old songs that I haven't heard in years and just pick and choose and play around there for a few hours.

They have songs from the 30s all the way up to Techno. And Bluegrass and Country, even a special separate Dylan and Beatles newsgroup. And Alternative to Celtic etc... it's all there. Stuff I've never even heard of is there.... Chinese mp3s! It's an audiophile hangout.

But even with dialup... say at 42kbps you can download the average mp3 (4mbs?) in about 5 minutes.... so a whole CD takes maybe takes an hour. And you can download there as your reading and writing here. When I had dialup I used to select the mp3s that I wanted and go to bed. In the morning they'd all be downloaded.

Here's a list (http://www.slyck.com/ng.php?page=4&sort=2) of some of the mp3 newsgroups. Every news server carries their own selection but Worldnet and EarthLink carry many of these... the most popular ones.

You can try out Giganews (https://secure.giganews.com/signup/) (my news server... via Comcast) free for 3 days. If you like it then you can sign up for $7.99 a month for the 2GB limit "Bronze" package. That's a whole lotta music.... and even a lot of porno. With dialup I doubt if you can even download 2GBs in a month.

Yeah, I think the city or county has a "short bus" (where's my protective hockey helmet :) ) with a wheelchair lift on it here for senior citizens and the disabled but it's not for me. In my mind I'm still an able-bodied 24 year old... and refuse to grow up and use any of the senior citizen or disabled services like that. I can always find someone to get me what I need. It's amazing the patience you acquire with SCI. The greyhound and me can live on Dominos for quite awhile!

Later.

bob clark]Hi Jukespin,

But after he has my card for an hour or two and I go online to check my bank balance I always hold my breath. So far so good... he's only nickel and diming me!

This Dave reminds me of a guy, Tye, that I've known forever and had an on-again/off-again relationship with for the past thirty years. I've known him since I moved up to the Placerville, El Dorado Co. area 31 years ago when we were nextdoor neighbors in a duplex. He and his wife, a real evil slut, could keep me and the neighborhood entertained with their shouting matches which occasionally boiled over into real brawls with property being thrown off their deck to the creek bed fifteen feet below and them exchanging blows. Not much of the physical viloence though; she had him convinced she knew black magic and would hurt him with it.
More of a parallel has been his dependence on meth for as long as I've known him and the habitual betrayals of everyone that trusted or depended on him that it borught on; hence the on-again/off-again nature of our relationship. Finally, four years ago (after one betrayal too many) I came to the realization that attempting to establilsh a friendly relationship with him was an exercise in futility. The last thing he'd promised, about five years before that, was a rather nice car that he had no use for. The transfere of title, of course, never took place but he milked the promise of it for more than I should have allowed. I guess we all have some areas or our devlopment that lag behind the rest.

Well, I could afford another car, it's the insurance and upkeep that's the hassle. ...A big part of my freedom was dragged away on the back of that tow truck. Boohoo.
Now that is what has kept me from reinvesting in a vehicle in the last three years since my old bomb died. The loss of that particullar kind of freedom and the necessary dependence on county Transit have been the major adjustments I've had to make in the same period. Fortunately, most of the Transit drivers are allright; I've only gotten into it with one of them big time and, on the rare occasions where she's assigned to move me, I talk as little as the business end of our interaction recquires. It's a bitch (so is she:D), though, not to be able to get im my own car and shop for whatever and even to drive to Sacramento about every two weeks to take in a movie, etc..
If it's alright with you, I'll get up a short list of artists and/or albums I'm looking for that you might help me track down on the net?

:)Much more my kind of thing!
I'll start looking into making the switch from AO awfuL ASAP and keep in touch. I'll go to PMs or email though as I doubt this stuff is of general interest to the rest of the community.

We differ here. I will use the Transit vans and, sometimes, buses and feel I'm at least getting what I need done and having some of the fed and local tax dimes help me the way they were intended under the provisions of the ADA. There's so damned much that isn't happening as ADA intended and promised it would; I'm taking this!:p:D

I used a big steel wok and a spatula to stove-top roast some Yemen Mocha early this morning and, even though I'm inexperienced at this kind of roasting, got it right enough to make a 1/1/1 blend of Mocha/Kenya Peaberry/Peet's Morning Blend that made a French-pressed cup of coffee that was the best I've had in a few years. An hour ago I refined the stove-top process a bit and roasted up another 3/4 C of the Mocha w/o any scorching; about midnight or so I should be able to try this latest batch in the same blend, or stright, and see if I've improved on the process. I should take notes but I've never been that kind of a roaster.:D

Later, and thanx again.

Hi Jukespin,

Some people need to live in a relationship of turmoil and/or destruction. I've had neighbors (not here) who thrived on that. I don't think they're happy unless they're fighting or getting into some kind of trouble. I think it's a way for them to keep entertained since they're unable to occupy their time with constructive endeavors. My older brother seems to be in a relationship like that now. He drinks too much (he drinks to near insanity.... I can't get that drunk if I tried) and his girlfriend is into opioids (oxycodone, fentynal patches soaked in water etc.... ewwwww and whatever else she can find) and it's constant bickering. There's no discussion or even arguing with a drunk and a doper... and to think that you can is crazy. Yet my brother thinks he can. He blames it on her for the drugs and I'm sure she blames it on him for his drinking. And he just started back to work after a 3 month "hiatus" so she's complaining about finances too. I try to explain the situation to my brother but he can't see it.... or refuses to.

I live alone with a well behaved greyhound and that's just the way I like it. I control my environment and things for the most part are nice and quiet. When I was younger and able-bodied any and everything went, but not anymore. I feel like old man... hey, I almost am one!

The bitch about my neighbor Dave is that he's a really nice guy. When he comes over he'll grab the broom and mop and start to clean up this mess I call home. Without having to be asked. And he vacuums and even does windows! And he pressure cleans the outside of my house once or twice a year. I'll be laying in bed or sittin' at the computer and it'll scare the hell outta me until I realize it's Dave just taking the paint off my house with that damn pressure cleaner! Hell, that's kinda worth the few bucks being siphoned outta my account. I don't know about you but I hate cleaning the house!

I'm just afraid that someday he might figure out a way to totally clean out my account and leave me with checks bouncing everywhere. I don't think he'd be that brazen but with crack addicts you can never be sure. He's not the worst crack addict I've known but he's bad enough that he can't be trusted. It's a shame. He works most of the time, gets paid on Friday and I swear, he NEVER has a dollar left on Monday. Hell, on Saturday! Oh well.

I won $16,000,000.00 (:) ) from him last year playing Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf 2004. I settled for him mowing the lawn for the rest of the season to work off the debt. Actually, it's worth 40 bucks to me for him to do the shopping anyway. He knows most of the stuff I always get so it's easy to write the list. And he knows where everything goes and puts it all away. So I officially pay him $20 (and a joint or two!) and if he "sneaks" another $20 it's no big deal. The one thing I don't like is when I have to catheterize he needs to go outback and I lock the screen security door. It's a shame you need to lock a "friend" outta the house but I don't want him going through my desk etc. I feel like I'm putting out the damn dog! :)

I live my life so I don't need to lie. I'm brutally honest and everything with me is upfront. He's the best liar you'll ever meet. He lies over and over again and I (and everyone else) keeps falling for it.... kinda. It's like that old saying about family and friends. Don't ever loan (or trust) them money that you can't afford to give them. I refuse to get upset over such things... I just pretend to be pissed at ol' Dave to keep him in line a little bit.

Speaking of meth. It's really bad on teeth even when it's snorted or injected. But with the new smokable form of "ice" it gets right on the teeth and gums and eats them away. Here's the result called "methmouth":

http://bcee1.home.comcast.net/methmouth200.jpg

KISS ME! Better yet, just say NO! :)

a real evil slut

You don't mince words eh? I take it that you didn't get along with her. :)

the necessary dependence on county Transit have been the major adjustments I've had to make in the same period.

When I was trying to reduce the monthly visits to my latest doctor I used my lack of transportation as an excuse. Hey, I just don't wanna go there even if I had a Lexus setting out front! But she recommended that I try the community senior citizen/disabled transportation service. I told her I'd rather not. When I "snuck" outside the office for a cigarette I saw the little bus pull right up to the building. Maybe someday... but I'll probably just let whatever illness I have get so bad that I'll call 911 and travel horizontally!

I thought all the free and safe (from spyware and viruses) porno was a thing of the internet past. I have been staying away like they carried plague for a few years now because of this impression.

The newsgroups are different from those websites. But you still need to be careful about what you download. Rule of thumb is just don't download single files that don't look right. You can kinda tell by the file size and how they're posted. You want to download a series of files that are posted by the same person.... all in a row. I've never gotten a virus or malware downloading mp3s there. And only once, when I was downloading some porno and clicked on a lonely (but enticing!) single file did I get infected. That was over 8 years ago I think. Actually, if you start at the bottom of the page.... it's a huge page.... sometimes 300,000 lines, and work your way up it's almost foolproof against virus infection. Someone will have already downloaded it and scanned it and will post a warning about that particular file. I don't worry about it.

If you want to try out that 3 day free trial period at Giganews it's cool. It will work with AOL. They won't screw up your card... they're a reputable company. I've known a couple people who've tried it, cancelled it within the 3 day period and their card wasn't billed at all. There's so much porno there it's insane. But with dialup you should probably only download jpgs. Depending on the size of course, but the average jpg takes a minute to download if I remember right. The mpgs and other video formats take quite awhile to download with dialup. There are some short clips there (maybe 5 to 10 MBs) that you can download in under an hour or so but you might want to spend the 3 days adding to your mp3 library instead! You really should have broadband to download the videos. I'll send ya a PM about getting a good news reader program.

So you're a coffee connoisseur. My cousin lives in Hawaii and is into coffee too. He doesn't roast his own beans (I don't think) but he goes to the gourmet coffee shops in Honolulu and is always trying out new beans. There are lots of small "specialty" coffee growers in Hawaii. And he has an espresso machine etc. He sent me some of his latest "favorite" stock and it was good but not quite my type. I like a dark roast taste. I buy Cafe Bustello (http://www.javacabana.com/), a dark roast Cuban coffee here as my standard coffee. I switch between that and Medaglia D'Oro, a dark Italian roast. Anyway, I blended my cousin's beans (I had to clean all the pot outta my coffee grinder first!) 1/3 to 2/3 into the Cafe Bustello and it's a great taste. Drinking it right now. I don't know enough about coffee to seriously talk about it but the standard arabica coffee like Maxwell House and Folgers etc I can't even drink. It's terrible.

Good luck with your latest roasting technique. Don't burn those delicate beans.

Sorry about the length of this post.... I just can't help myself. :)
