I love the way those articles always start out, but hate the way they always end in that it will be at least five years if ever before it is even tried in humans and it may not work in humans because our spinal cords are thicker than rats cords are, its like Chris Reeve use to say "oh to be a rat".

As ever, with these kind of articles, the possibilities sound so full of promise. As a scientist it must be quite thrilling to be working in this field at the moment (despite the funding problems I suppose), but as a chronic SCI the potential promise is so heavily tinted by the frustration of knowing the timeframe for humans is still far away. BUT, research aimed at chronics and the discovery of this 'gel' is nevertheless good news, very good news, so thanks Kiran!

Thanx Kiran.

You have another friendly compliment coming from me that is the same as Schmeky's.

Since I'm one of those really complete SCI people it sounds good to me. There is similar work being done at MIT so hopefully one of these days it will be tried out in people.
Now get back to Constitutional Law:)

I could be wrong but I think these are the same type of gels that NeurVita clinic uses.
"Bryukhovetskiy's team has implanted SpheroGel (a biodegradable polymer matrix) with embedded cells in six patients who required reconstructive surgeries."

"An ideal matrix for neurons would be soft, chemically inert and would have a high water content like a sponge -- something that resembles the natural environment around developing neural tissue," she said. Made of up to 99 percent water, hydrogels come closer to meeting these criteria than any other artificial material.
Thanks for posting. Seems like there are several approaches for making scaffolding in the injury site where such an schaffold could be useful. We have also heard bout Neurovitas SpheroGel, Total ReCords Rmx and MIT’s Nanofibers, I guess all this is good news and could be useful for a future cure.

The Institute of Experimental Medicine team induced spinal cord lesions in 28 rats by removing small sections of the cord or compressing spinal cord tissue. They then filled the spinal cavity around the injured area with blocks of hydrogel laced with stem cells from rat bone marrow.
But is this the correcet cells to be used? Don’t know if they are the right one to use and so good to create new neurons. I guess most of the recovery here in this experiment was due to the injuries was acute ones and some regeneration would have happened regardless, with a little help of this schaffold though.

I just met with the doctor who performed my surgury and asked him to confirm that my spinal cord is actually completly severed. Unfortunatly he told me it was. :(
I doubt any of the current research going on with stem cells, growth factors etc.. will be of any help. For those of us who are completly complete, does anyone have an idea if this is possible to fixed, what would be needed to repair the cord if it is possible, and if it's even realistic to hope it might happed?
Thanks in advance.
