MY cousin's son has walking pneumonia. He has just started antibiotics and my cousin says he will not be contagious after a few days. We are supposed to go to their house for a birthday party this sunday. I'm concerned about my husband getting it. He is a C5 quad. Should I be concerned or just go and hope he doesn't get it? How serious would it be if he did get it?

My daughter was a c5-c7 quad and through extensive therapy she has moved to a t11 paraplegic. When she was listed as a quad I had to be very careful with her being around even just colds. Due to her limit of mobility and the weakness in her abdominal muscels she had trouble just coughing so it led her to being very sick. Personally I would not chance it. I am sure everyone will fully understand.

Without cultures it's very difficult to determine if this is caused by a virus or by bacteria. If your cousin's son is old enough to reliably cover his mouth when he coughs or sneezes and ALL of you wash your hands frequently before touching your husband, chances are he will be all right. It's really up to you; there will still be a little risk.

Would wearing a mask help prevent the spread of this illness?

It would probably help more for the person with the infection to wear the mask. But it would probably help a little. It still would not completely eliminate the risk.
