NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Jersey's legislature is weighing bills that would give Gov. Jon Corzine more time to file his budget plan, a traditional courtesy granted to incoming governors, a state official said on Tuesday.

The usual deadline is the fourth Tuesday in February, which would give the Democratic governor until February 28, explained Tom Vincz, a spokesman for Bradley Abelow, who has been nominated as treasurer by Corzine.

But Corzine, who will have to close a deficit estimated at up to $6 billion, would have until around March 21 or March 23 if both houses approved the measure, Vincz added.

The new governor has appointed a number of advisory committees. A January 10 report by the Budget and Re-engineering Government Transition Policy Group drew a devastating picture of the state's finances.
