India embraces stem cell research
By Indrajit Basu

KOLKATA - Ajit Jogi, a member of the Indian parliament and a former chief minister of an Indian state, almost lost his life in a motor vehicle accident while traveling at night during an election in April 2004. He survived due to prompt medical attention, but was left paralyzed to the extent even breathing was an ordeal.

But Delhi-based Dr Geeta Shroff's "revolutionary stem cell therapy" caught the attention of his family. He has been conducting embryonic stem cell-based treatment and research since 2000. Jogi, 59, called the treatment "remarkable" to the point he was thinking of returning to politics and joining Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government.

"My organs made dramatic improvement after I received Dr Shroff's treatment. I am almost normal," he said in an interview prior to suffering a heart attack November 23 that left him in serious condition.

"This cutting-edge tool [stem cell treatment] of medical science has the potential to put India on the global map as a major contributor in the field of stem cell therapy," Shroff said. She raised a furor in the global stem cell research fraternity last week when she claimed she has beaten the world in treating incurable diseases with stem cells harvested from human embryos. "India could be one of the forerunners of stem cell research," Shroff said.

Though ethical and governmental barriers impede stem cell research in Western countries (where Christianity is dominant) - particularly involving embryonic stem cells - experts say such barriers are a boon for countries such as India, which have a large pool of scientific talent and do not face such opposition.

my elders had a suugestion abt Ajit jogi politician recently cured by DR.Geeta shroff. They said that at one hand politician views are reliable, trustworthy and someone like us build confident on doc, BUT at the same time on other hand, elders said that politician are all after poiltician . full of politics. they cud hv posted the improvement to endanger their competitors in their field and make them sure that he will be back in politics after improving or getting back to his health.......

duh!!!!!now whom should i rely for the treatment..

any views.......or just leaving upto god? the improvemnt published of ajit jogi india was for JUST THEIR INTEREST or it was REAL..........:(:(

hi shweta....don't worry...even if ajit jogi's statements are politically motivated, still Dr Geeta is not the only one doing work in the field of stem cells....don't lose hope...many times you will come across untrue and totally ridiculus claims (especially with so many people in the press who don't have much knowledge about SCI), these do make one angry and frustrated - but i'm sure with so many wise and noble hard working people trying their best, the 'ilaaj' is very near....don't worry and please don't lose hope......

Dear Kaushal and Shweta

Good to know from Kaushal. Infact very encouraging but Shweta seems to be double minded. I agree with Shweta that one really becomes hopeless when he/she finds some thing unproven. Both of you try to get info about Dr. Geeta and try to know how many SCI Patients she has treated and what about the results? Can she bring you in contact with her patients who have been treated? If so then it will be handy for us. Please keep me update about Dr. Geeta both of you as i might come India for treatment.

God bless both of you.

With Love

hey shweta i guess you are right about having a latest MRI scan...good idea.....in fact i had got an MRI scan done in 1997 that was just after i got SCI and have not got it done after that.....
jawaid i'll let you know if there is any news here about any breakthrough here in india.......as of now, in chandigarh (india), there is some stem cell research going on in PGI , but thats related to cardiac research...also a team of korean doctors recently visited chandigarh to explore the possibilty of setting up a stem cell bank here...
a spinal injuries rehab centre is coming about at this place....
a full stem cell research centre is coming about in CMC, Vellore - this is the first of its kind in india (totally dedicated to explore the possibilities of stem cells to provide a cure for various medical conditions)....
it was nice getting a response from shweta and also from jawaid....
wish you a nice and a lovely day ahead...

Dear All

Looks to me that this thread is only for Pakistan and India. Already lot of good things happening in between two countries to come close each other. Really very happy to find Shweta and Kaushal here.

For your info Shweta i requested Dr. Geeta for the detail but she refused to me. May be she can send me the document in which there is info about the patients who have been treated by her.

Shweta and Kaushal it looks to me that we are good friends. Though away from each other but believe me i have lot of love and good wishes for you. There is no difference of religion and cost once we are SCI Patients.

Hope we will keep in touch and share all the good things with each other. God bless you. Shweta i will be in touch with you in every means. Kaushal tell me some thing about your self? How old are you and when and how you met SCI? You can contact to me at my e-mail too. Will wait your reply.

Sincerely

hi all..
shweta please do let us know when you meet dr. geeta.....
and one more thing, if you travel by air - there is 50% concession on indian airlines for a physically disabled person and also for one attendant...this came about after javed abidi (a leading lawyer and rights activist - who himself is on a wheelchair) won a lawsuit against indian airlines...
also i know that in the new delhi airport the hydraulic lifting arrangement is there at the airport so getting into the aircraft is no problem...do they have any such arrangement in mumbai also?....

jawaid i will be sending you an email soon...

have a nice day...
good luck and best wishes

Atul it was very sweet of u to tell me abt ur precise n very knowledgable abt flights concessions :):). it was nice to know from u precisly thou i knew already :)

Atul, i had booked flights tickets n also asked for concessions. but luckily, booking flights before one month slashes 50% directly for all the passengers. so i got 50% off for every member by BOOKING ONE MONTH BEFORE.

n i am eagerly waiting to post My visit with Dr.Geeta shroff. Hope for the best.

Jawaid - its okay if u didnt got ne info.i m going to go so rest urself.:)
