rant about apple.
i finally went and purchased a 17 inch power book, i place the order around nov3 apple store had a sale said 500 off the 17 inch power book 2699 price and free shipping, nowhere did they say they say it was a model that was being discontinued or upgraded. i received it probably around nov 9 or 10th.
everything seems to be working fine, i happened to go into a apple specialty store last week and find out that a new g4 power book came out with a better screen, bette rvideo card and lower price! i am pissed.
i went into the apple store today in SOHO and they said they normally wont ship out stuff if they know a upgrade is coming wothin 3 weeks

trying to get them to make good, getting nowhere so far wit their voice number they gave me to call, of course i threw all the boxes out that it shipped in , since it worked and i thought everthing was good.

It is standard practice to discount models that are being discontinued, and with research you would have found that this model was planned for replacement. Bottom line...are you unhappy with what you got? Does it not work? This is not just an Apple practice.

Metro,

I am sorry to hear this. If I had known that you were buying one, I could have advised you about the specs.

I have the 17-inch model that is one step below the one that you have. Bought it nearly 2 years ago. The processor is 1.33 GHz compared to the 1.67 GHz in the new one. The screen on my model has 1440 x 900, compared to the 1680 x 1050. The higher resolution just makes things smaller. I don't think that the higher resolution screen adds all the much. It is still a stunning and fast screen, even after two years of hard use. The new model also has the double-layered DVD drive that can write 8.5 Gb and about twice as fast. So, I just bought a LaCie external firewire DVD drive for $99. Finally, I understand that its battery life is 5.5 hours, about an hour longer than what I have. To my knowledge, the rest of the computer is pretty much the same. I have both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800, two USB 2.0 ports, S-video, airport, and PC card slot.

You may have the model that is one step ahead of mine, with a 1.67 GHz processor. Incidentally, since you are in New York City, I strongly recommend that you buy and repair your computers from Tekserve on 24rd Street. http://www.tekserve.com/ They are the best and very honest. My son and daughter use to work there and i buy all my Macs and peripherals there.

oh i should have asked! i had been in tekserve too last month! its good to know that they are well regarded. i will keep that in mind for all my needs. i dont think the new power book was known to them , since they told me that there were differences between the 17 and 15 inch power book beside screen size. , now all the features on the 17 are available in the 15 including the dual monitor capability and ability to add additional cards without a custom config and there is a 12 inch powerbook
i have the 1.67 processor, however there is a brand new display and graphics card

and its cheaper

Metro, all apple powerbooks have dual monitor capabilities, dating back a decade or more. If you connect your powerbook to an external projector or screen, you have a choice to either "mirror" your screen or have two screens where the cursor moves between one and the other.

I think that the only thing that you are missing from the new package is the higher resolution screen (with the required increase in vRAM) and the dual-layer DVD. I don't know how much need you have for a dual-layer DVD and the cost of the dual-layer discs is a consideration (about $3 each, compared to $1 for standard DVD-RWs). But, getting an external La Cie Porsche will give you 16x DVD with dual layer capability for only $99 from Tekserve. On their web site, it was for $139. $99 is about the best deal that I have seen on or off internet. It is normally about $200.

my perseverance has paid off, i called apple 2 or 3 times and th support ensured me i had the newest power book , they said all power book shipped since October 16 have the newest stuff. mine was ordered on the nov 5 ,, i still didnt believe them,, i looked at my system profile and it showed the lesser screen resolution. i called back and finally got to tech support and by the serial number they realized it was built before October , and it was in fact the lower specs, they apologized and will send me a prepaid fed ex and a refund. they dont care that i dont have the original boxes either.
i now need to back up what i have on the hard drive , i have some video i was starting to edit so i need to not lose that ,
what would be the best back up for the video i have? a external hard drive i would guess, maybe i will go to tek serve tomorrow to see what they say.
http://www.digsoc.com/index.html is the store that tipped me off that something was shady. i should give them some business, have you ever heard of them dr young?

Apple has always made me say dang I should of waited, but it's always been at top speed in it's era. Like now I have a G5, it can go up to 8 gigs of ram, I'm fine at the 2.5 it's in. Apple no matter what you get in it's era will always be up to speed, mac never sells a bs system so I've never been unstisfied.

The only thing to look out for is the software requirements, if you ever bought software other then what you computer comes with, you'll find out you can only use it with the latest system, that will force you to either buy the latest mac or stay in the past, apple sells hardware that way, it's a down with the joneses situation, and you'll still love mac.....

i am surrprissed that apple first line of support is so lame.
in my first instance with the poerbook the first 2 phone calls to thier support insured me i had the latest and newest powerbook screen, i know enough about technology that i knew they were incorrect. i pushed it and finally got to a teck support that looked at the serial number and realized i had been shipped a older model .
after i tracked my powerbook return and saw that apple had recived my powerbook for about 7 days and no credit to my cc had been issued. i called to make sure everthing was ok. the first tier of support did not ask me for my RMA number . they informed me that it takes up to two biling cycles to credit my account. i gave done a lot of online shopping and i know there is no way in hell it takes 60 days to refund the money once the item is recived.
the csr support said they was nothing more that could be done, i asked to speak to a supervisior, he was refusing to let me do so , and finally agreed after much tenacity , but not without saying that i am wasting my time since the supervisor is goig to say the same thing. i get to the supervisor , they actually ask for the RMA number, they look it up and in 2 minutes inform me my account was credited yesterday for the $2500, it just hadnt shown up on my online credit card page yet.
