This is an interesting press release from an organization called Matchpia.org which was originally formed by Tim Dutta, a man whose fiance Pia could not find matching bone marrow to treat her leukemia. He was shocked to find that the National Marrow Donor Program which started in 1986 and is funded by the U.S. government to register potential donors for bone marrow has too few South Asians. Pia waited two years for a match and did not get one. He started a campaign in New Jersey which spread across the nation, recruiting over 24,000 south Asian donors. He, however, claimed that he did not get cooperation from the NMDP program for his organization's registration efforts, particularly from the Director of Minority Recruitment at NMDP. In August, the Director of Minority Recruitment at NMDP resigned and is suing the leadership of the NMDP for discriminating against him.
This is so strange because the NMDP has long been aware of this problem and even created the office of a Director of Minority Recruitment because of its awareness of this problem. NMDP provides grants to blood banks and other organizations to recruit minorities. People of African or Asian descent have difficulties finding matches in the NMDP registry.
