• Racing team owner Sam Schmidt says he will donate some resources from his paralysis foundation to help rebuild two Centers for Independent Living that were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in Biloxi, Miss., and New Orleans.

"It's common sense that climbing to the attic isn't a reality for someone in a wheelchair," Schmidt said. "I'm worried that many probably suffered, and those that made it through the storm now have little or no resources available."

So Schmidt will match any donations he can raise.

"Cash will be important to help rebuild these centers, and to assist the centers further inland that are helping fill the void created by the loss," Schmidt said.

The two centers that Schmidt wants to help are private, nonprofit facilities for the disabled that provide vocational training and assistance.

Schmidt, a former Indy-car racer, suffered a severe spinal-cord injury in a crash in 2000.

The Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation helps spinal-cord injury victims and others with neurological disorders, including stroke victims and people with ALS, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.

It looks like Sam Schmidt is following in the footsteps of Jerry Lewis.
