I thought I'd start a thread for members to post their art: drawings, paintings, sculpture, photography, etc. All of mine posted here are post-SCI.

Here's a charcoal drawing I did a while back. It's supposed to look like a marble sculpture of a lion's head...

My first attempt at sketching after injury. Lotsa improvising with mixed medium- charcoal, pencils, pen ...
Very nice! :) All the color comes from eye shadow?!

Was it frustrating trying to relearn how to draw with quad-hands? It was very frustrating for me.

LOVE your charcoals :)
thanks! I really like the different effects you can get with charcoal. Pre-SCI I did drawings that were very smooth and blended, but I like the texture in these too. i like seeing the "artist's hand" in the work. I think that's why while I love DaVinci's paintings, I prefer the drawings/sketches/studies he did before the paintings themselves.

Nice sketches, Scorpion and Chick.

Was the lion inspired by any particular character?

Thanks, Steven.

No, just something out of my head. I've always liked lions--maybe in part because of seeing/reading "The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe" as a kid. -shrug-

No, had to edit that part about eye-shadow...was the wrong piece, I think, but may have used some to add definition/color skin texture.
Ha, yea, when I first tried, I kinda just used whatever was available and handy for me, but not as frustrating as I thought, . Mostly time consuming and messy - I use hands to blend/smudge a lot - but definitely less free form and spontaneous.

It got less frustrating for me once I stopped trying so hard and loosened up. It took a while before I could draw as well as before. I still get frustrated once in a while, but not nearly as much as I did at first.

Well, my stuff doesn't compare to you two, I'm a little more simplistic although I do have some stuff that's more detailed than this, here's a link (http://carecure.org/forum/showthread.php?t=46966) to my thread earlier this year with some drawings. I think both of you were on hiatus from CC at the time.

A few things I have done. I can't get a decent pic with the digital, but they are on white paper and they are WAY too big to scan. The rose was done with some professional art pencils and the rockstars (shocker that I draw them, eh?) were done with just a good ole number 2 pencil, my main choice to use when drawing. People are my speciality, but haven't picked up the sketchpad in a while.

These are all done before 2002.

All of you are gifted to be able to draw/sketch as exhibited; akin to Raven's gift to write poetry. One can't learn what you all do, it's just in you.

Scorp,,,I still have the your sketch[you did for ''Chris''-the other 1/2 of the ''Dynamic Duo''] of the ''monster'' from Expo '02. He recently bought a house that he'll settle in, and will display it. I've held it for him while during his vagabond spell.

Yeah, I still have the original somewhere. I'd say it's 18" x 24", and I'm pretty sure it's on acid-free paper. It might be a little rough on the edges, but I guess that can be masked if framed. I might be convinced to sell the original.

Are you familar with Hine's work at all? He was a Depfression era photographer. Good stuff.

One day I'd like to get my left arm tattoo'd in a half sleeve - from my shoulder down to my forearm. There aren't many "good" tattoo artists in Jackson, MS. When I do explore it I'd like to be armed with a killer design. Maybe somewhere down the line we could collaborate on a design. I love oriental and of course women with flowing hair... dames & dragons if you will. Think about it. PROPS dude on your art!

um, i thought sprites were faries n elves etc......... whats this yer talkin with game characters? Sprites are like faeries and stuff, but they are also used in video games.

As an example, think of the Nintendo game Super Mario Brothers. Each of the different poses Mario (http://www.videogamesprites.net/SuperMarioBros/Characters/Mario/index.html) (or Luigi, Princess Toadstool, Bowser, etc) could take were individual images that were constantly being switched around to give the appearance of action and movement.

Sprites evolved to be more complex with new games and technology. From Final Fantasy (http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasy/) to Zelda 2 (http://www.videogamesprites.net/Zelda2/) to Chrono Trigger (http://www.videogamesprites.net/ChronoTrigger/). A recent example of the use of sprites is the game Final Fantasy Tactics (http://www.videogamesprites.net/FinalFantasyTactics/). Sprites were also used extensively in the Mortal Kombat (http://mkw.mortalkombatonline.com/sprites/mk1/) and Street Fighter (http://sprites.fireball20xl.com/OS/HTML/Capcom/Fight/street.htm) series of games.

Sprite art is difficult, but interesting. I was just wondering if anyone here did any of it. :)

I started a year ago with oil painting. I have only made a few paintings. I find it quite relaxing. Although I don’t have too much of the inspiration required summertime and right now. I guess the inspiration will pick up this fall when the dark evenings are here again. I have never painted before but just bought a couple of learning books and DVD’s and took it from there.

This painting is from the northern part of Norway where my mother is born. The mountain range is named the “Ice summits” (Nor=Istindene) or something like that in English. There is a small farm on the other side of the river, and the river itself is an attractive salmon river, named Maalselv. The river boats on the other side are mostly used for salmon fishing. The area is also known for lots of moose and hunting is a very popular activity.

I guess I’m a bit happy with the mountains itself and the middle part reflections although the reflections are not perfectly true – I’m to busy dealing with all the details. I’m not happy with some of the buildings where I find some of the white to be to white.

Well. I hope you like it. If there is other CC members doing paintings out there it would have been very nice to see their work. Leif

Thanks both of you. I’m not an expert for sure. One other mistake I did was to have the horizontal line where the buildings are placed on in the vertical centre of the painting. This cuts the painting in two pieces along the vertical axis. I should have lowered that line a couple inches and included more sky. A photographer would have understood that. It’s the same principles applying for composing a painting as it is for a photo. I’m a bit happy with some of the branches in the tree in the bottom left corner (the foreground), they kind of guides the eye into the centre of interest in the painting (any line made in a picture will direct the eye). The lighter roof on the barn in the middle part slightly to the right will also draw the attention to the eye further into the picture and then the eye will be drawn into the valley in-between the two bigger mountains that will force the eye into that direction. Or something like that:thinking:

true, but only if you like following the 'rules'. If yer looking for a critique i'd say that you have a very straight road and three overly distinct planes that warrent more mechanical symmetry. while the whole painting could be reworked to be 'properly' configured, i would have 'improperly' placed the road dead center and had it veer to the left close to the mountains. my opinion, for what it's worth.

Nowww,,,,Mich,,,,, your inquiry to ''garner'' a Scorpion 'n Freej pic,,,, Now that can go before the ''Consortium'' and put up for debate 'n vote. In that case,,,,, it always helps if your working with somebody;) on the side.

Hmm...Sounds like I need to speak with a member of the said consortium & see if I could work with someone on the "inside". I've been lucky enough for them to work in my favor in the past, for which I am extremely greatful. :) There is still a topless 'Stang roadtrip to the keys in the works.... :) Please let me know if the consortium has met. ;)

For those of you with great talent and who live in NJ, donations of artwork are being sought. I met Wise for the first time in 1998 at this conference. He was the speaker to the teens and was wonderful.

TO: Supporters of Biomedical Research

I would really appreciate your help in reaching artists , who are patients and/or survivors of life-threatening diseases, who might donate a piece of their work to NJABR's first silent auction.

The New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research is a 501(C)(3), not-for-profit educational organization, whose membership consists of leading statewide research institutions from academia and industry as well as voluntary health groups, hospitals and allied trade and professional organizations. We are seeking donations of original works of art by New Jersey artists willing to participate in a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the Summer Student Fellowship Program for outstanding incoming high school seniors committed to pursuing careers in biomedical research.

Donated artwork will be displayed at NJABR's annual "Thank You Research" Gala at The Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset on Thursday evening, November 17, 2005. Donors will be asked to set a minimum bid and will receive a tax-deduction for the declared value of their work. All artwork must include a biography of the artist. Artists will receive two tickets to the Gala as guests of the research community.

The Gala celebrates the people, the promise, and the process of biomedical research and caps activities organized for "Thank You Research" Month each November. This year's theme is "Biomedical Researchers: Shaping the Future." We will recognize people from the biomedical research community, who serve as mentors and support programs to educate the public about the benefits of biomedical research.

If you know of any artists interested in participating, or if you have questions, please have them contact me at (908) 964-9449 or email at mackta@njabr.org.

I have done some with pencil but nothing with charcoal, always wanted to try because it looks like real fun to do (by looking at other posts above). And you are right; sometimes there is lack of time to do things like this. I have most of the time a framed canvas ongoing. Sometimes I just paint for a minute or two, sometimes an hour or two. Haven’t done much lately tough, probably will pick it up again this autumn. Water colour also makes really beautiful paintings. The oil technique suits me good, if painting in layers the paint has to dry some for a few days. – Please post some of your paintings. If you do it I will post some more.:)

Sounds like a deal, Leif. :) I'll try to post some of mine at some point (I don't have them readily available right now), but they're mostly from high school and not that great! The problem for me is that once I start drawing, I get so into it that I hardly do anything else until I finish that piece! Not such a great idea when I have so much studying to do, lol.

You're right, oil paintings take a really long time since I have to wait for each color to dry. What medium did you use for the painting above? And where do you get the ideas/inspiration for your paintings? Do you do still life/nature paintings?

And where do you get the ideas/inspiration for your paintings? Do you do still life/nature paintings?Great, I’ll be looking forward to see your master pieces. You say your paintings are not great? Well I know for sure mine are very amateurish, but that doesn’t matter as long as it is fun and relaxing to do it. That is the important thing.

All the paintings I have done so far (and that is just a few) has been in oil. I also use some white sprite from time to time on the first layers, if I’m painting in layers (can’t stand the smell of turpentine), if you wants to do it faster you can paint “wet in wet”. I also paint on linen canvas. - Why I started with oil I’m not so sure about, probable because most of the masterpieces by the old masters where done in this medium and because it was supposed to be a difficult medium lol

The ideas I get from photos I preferable take myself. I have to paint after photos – can’t sit outside for a month or two:) The first painting here on this thread was after a photo, the second post was after a painting that inspired me I did find on internet, it’s originally after a Rumanian painter. I prefer to do nature paintings, but have done one still life, I’ll post it below – it’s a rose on my kitchen table, but here again I had to take a photo of it as well due to my slow painting habit.

If there are others doing paintings - please post them.

Monique
10-08-2005, 01:37 PM
Amateurish? LOL, I think your paintings look very professional! But you're right, the important thing is whether you enjoy it.

I really like the way you did the leaves on this one, and the shadow on the table. Looks so real. I love the glass and its reflection too.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten to post mine - I will, I promise! I've only done a couple oil paintings though and I don't have any pictures of those. I did them while I was in India a few years ago, on a piece of glass which broke. I'll post some of my pencil drawings though.

Thats a great idea to paint from a photograph. My grandmother's place in Bombay has a beautiful view of the Arabian Sea from her balcony, and I always want to paint it but never get the chance. I have photos of the view though which I will post too.

I have photos of the view though which I will post too.I agree. I also like the view of the sea. I believe it is probably a stunning view you have from your grandmother’s balcony over the Arabian Sea in Bombay (please post)... Although I just have painted a few paintings I like very much to paint seascapes as well. Painting after photos is a good way to paint since some of us are not so mobile. In fact they say painting after photos also are supposed to be more difficult than painting real life, but I’m not so sure about that, what’s matter is to have fun while doing it. Here is one seascape I did, my first painting, it’s after a photo from a painter from some place in Oregon (maybe someone can recognise the view)… By the way, my previous PT is originally from New Delhi, India.

And here is one from the “Hardanger Fjord”, - this is just a couple of hours drive from where I live. It’s supposed to be a glacier on top of those mountains in the horizon :)

The big boulders are due to the last Ice Age – when the ice disappeared it left those big boulders in the landscape.

HeY Monique. Thanks for posting. I like them. Those are very nice pencil drawings, I liked especially the still life, and the Radha Krishna was pretty neat. You also managed to get the bright colours out of the Mandala watercolour painting. – You must do more art like this, of course you must study as well, but putting aside some time for your drawings and paintings can produce many nice moments and create great pictures in the future as well… I got a little bit inspired by trying pencil drawings from this thread. Maybe I’ll try sometime during the winter… Thanks again for posting. And thank you Jim.

This oil painting I did is from a cosy little town near by me “Skudesneshavn” - “Skudesnes harbour”.

It is a well preserved part of a small city dating back to the “sail ship” time, before the steam. I guess there are approximately 120 houses in this part of this city like this. It is located down by the sea of course and all houses are very well maintained and people are living in them. There are also cosy little coffee shops there and quite a few artists lives there (not me I’m not an artist).

Since this old part of this city is so maintained and people are living there I remember one time I was at a “similar” place in Canada (a road trip) where people lived like they did back in the old days, that place was named Kings Landing in New Brunswick, Canada.

Ok, I understand. I am T4 on my right hand side. On my left hand side I am around the hip level. So, my hands and my arms are okay. But I have to use a wheelchair in my daily living, I can stand and walk a few metres (yards) with a walker, but it is though going so it is difficult to do that as much as I want to do it. Thanks again justadildo.

Just think of the chair as a temporary 'demotion' to Serial Stalker :p

Ya know, you can use your nightmare inducing sketches as a weapon to thwart that arch nemesis of yours - the evil Scorpoleon -and his plan to kidnap every woman on carecure, one by one, by hypnotizing them with the glare reflecting off his shiny bald head. He might be some sort of body snatcher, seeking out helpless crip bodies, using them to sketch out his fantasies and to expose them for all the world to see!

He must be stopped!

Keep creating. Nightmares are nothing more than dreams that challenge one's fears.

Here is an oil painting I did from a photo dated back to 1959 from a place not fare from here. I have only painted a few paintings (10-12) but what I did with this painting afterwards was to transform it back to a “photo”… The post after this one is not the original photo (because that one was much damaged) but a photo image I manipulated from the original oil painting I did to become a photo again… What a waste of time:thinking:

And I know there is a lot of things I could have done better- but who cares as long as it is fun?

Never liked to paint or draw? Yeah, right. Obviously you have some talent and it appears that you have some experience, friggin hotdog. *Beep, beep*, Your'a *Bleeep*! And I never gave you permission to post a picture of me. That was clearly a stipulation for me to model for you. I modeled nude with my toothpick(well, I wore my ragged jean shorts as I am a nevernude, but that was supposed to be our secret) Damn you Mr. Cockee, damn yous all to hell!

Ok, now that I got that out of my system here's another pic of something in my sketchbook, but it didn't translate that well as the flash caused some reflection from the pencil lead, I tried to clean it up in photoshop but it didn't totally fix it. I really need a scanner. Oh well, here it is...

I think I doodled that after my old roomates talked me into trying blow, which made me so nervous and fidgety that I started compulsively drawing and shading, and didn't stop until this was done. So hey, at least I got something positive from the experience, I guess I also learned how gross and stupid blow is with all of it's hollow allure and amped hypertension, so that was a valuable lesson.

Oh, and nice paintings Leif, I've only experimented with painting briefly, doing a few watercolors and school art projects, but it's not my strength. I do want to start learning to paint with airbrush though
