Jake had his first IMT session yesterday. The small building was filled with therapists from around the US and patients from around the Southern US. One of the patients was a physician and she plans to install IMT in her practice. The first hour was the usual question and answer period plus a short ASIA exam for sensation and function. They also made lots of digital photos of his posture for an historical perspective. This was followed by an hour of IMT. The IMT is basically the placing of the therapist's hands over various parts of the patient. They then drew a map of the places on Jake's body that they feel need therapy (a total of 12). These parts of the body must be connected at various times by placing the hands over them and connecting them with another hand to various vital body parts like the heart, brain, spinal cord, liver, kidney, lungs, etc.? They say then can feel an eyelash under 20 sheets of paper? The founder of IMT (her main office is in Connecticut and has several offices around the US) placed her hands over Jake's spinal cord and head. After 15 minutes she was able to pinpoint his C3-6 injury, that his spine swayed to the right, and where there was fibrosis in the cord. She also noted a foreign object over his cord, which I told her, was due to the nerve graft and omentum covering from Dr. Kao's surgery. She has a PhD in neurophysiology. Her husband, who has degrees in chiropractic medicine, acupuncture, and neuromuscular therapy, performed many procedures on Jake with his hands. After that a 30 minute session, she again placed her hands on Jake and felt some improvement in his spinal column and cord flow? They then spent another 30 minutes on IMT, followed by 30 minutes of helping Jake walk with the aid of leg-braces, 4 assistants, and a walker. We are going back tomorrow for another session. I am not sold on the IMT yet, but the whole family and support group will give it a try. They want us to buy a special TEMS ($1,500 electrical stimulating) machine that Jake must wear at all times while he is in bed. His caregivers must also perform several hours per day of IMT (connecting of their hands over the injured parts with the vital body parts? They will train us to do the in home IMT. We will also buy a pair of special walking sneakers ($180) that have a large heal with a spring to help in walking. I will provide more information on Friday
