Man paralysed after stabbing
By Nino Williams

A 24-year-old man may never walk again after being stabbed in the back in an apparently motiveless attack.

The computer programmer was returning to his home in the early hours of Thursday October 9, walking along Telford Avenue in Streatham Hill.

At approximately 1am, just minutes from where he lived, he was about to turn into Kirkstall Road when he saw a man walking towards him.

As they approached each other the suspect stuck to his course, so the victim stood to one side, but as they passed the man suddenly spun around and plunged a knife once into his victim's back, seriously damaging his spine. The victim fell to the ground and began to scream, alerting neighbours who came to his assistance and called an ambulance.

He was taken to hospital where he has been almost entirely paralysed ever since. Doctors believe he will never walk again.

Detective Superintendent Archer of Streatham CID, who is investigating the case said: "This random, unmotivated attack has left a young man paralysed for life.

"The victim's girlfriend has been at his side ever since. Things can change but it does seem that he is unlikely to walk again. This was obviously carried out by a very dangerous individual, who made no attempt to rob his victim. We would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen what happened or who has any information concerning this incident." Moments after the attack, the victim heard a car engine start. Police are keen to trace the driver of the car, or anyone who may have been in the area.

The attacker is described as black, aged around 35, about 6ft, and of athletic build. He was wearing a hooded top, which was possibly purple.
