ASHEVILLE - Alice Fleming thanks God that police have arrested a man in connection with the shooting that paralyzed her son.

"I'm so glad they got him, and I just hope justice can be served," she said. Her son, Albert Lee "K.C." Fleming, 29, was shot June 16 at Pisgah View Apartments. The bullet injured his spinal cord, instantly making him paraplegic.

Police on Thursday arrested Demetrius Leron Grant, 29, in connection with the shooting.

He was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury.

News of the arrest revived Alice Fleming, weary from a week of worrying about her son. Albert Fleming was arrested Monday on numerous charges, including probation violation, common law robbery and failing to appear in court on a habitual misdemeanor assault charge.

The Fleming family spent three days trying to scrape together $2,400 to pay a bail bondsman to get Albert Fleming out of jail. His bond was set at $32,500.

After getting out of jail Wednesday, Fleming went to the hospital before returning home to his wife and four children.

Fleming had criticized police for taking too long to solve his case and for keeping him in the dark about it.

"They may have done their job," he said after hearing about the arrest. "Yes, I am happy. Very happy."
