A 26-year-old Rock Hill woman was recovering in an area hospital Thursday after falling from a second-story balcony and breaking her neck, authorities say.
Janika Shanta Adams was not paralyzed in the fall, but she suffered a shattered cheekbone and broken nose in addition to her broken neck, according to Rock Hill police reports.
Woman in fair condition
Thursday night, Adams was in fair condition at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, a hospital spokeswoman said. She was transferred there from Piedmont Medical Center.
Rock Hill police Detective Marc Kitts said Adams' neck injury was a cervical fracture. Paralysis occurs in neck injuries when the spinal cord is damaged, York County Coroner Doug McKown said.
Man driving by saw her fall
Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 21-year-old Rock Hill man was driving in the Paces River apartment complex when he saw Adams fall from her balcony in the 1900 block of Paces Landing Avenue.
After approaching Adams, the man knocked on doors of nearby apartments, seeking help for the woman, according to the report. He then called 911.
Rock Hill police arrived at 11:18 p.m. and found the victim lying on a concrete sidewalk being treated by emergency medical personnel.
When police interviewed Adams at the hospital, she told officers she was walking on the railing on her apartment's balcony and fell off, the report said.
Adams had been drinking alcohol, but it is unclear whether she was legally intoxicated.
