Maputo

A young Mozambican doctor, Ernesto Antonio, who was shot by criminals on 1 May, may be condemned to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair, reports Saturday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".

Antonio was working in a rural health post in the northern province of Nampula, but came to Maputo to prepare his masters degree. When he was attacked (the motive for which remains unclear) a bullet hit him in the throat, and damaged his spine. Antonio was evacuated to a clinic in South Africa where he underwent a delicate operation.

He is now back in a Maputo hospital, paralysed from the waist downwards. He moves about in a wheelchair pushed by a relative. Medical staff say that he will be confined to a wheelchair for between six months and a year, after which he will be submitted to physiotherapy - this examination will determine whether there is any chance of recovering the use of his legs.

The police arrested two of the three men who attacked Antonio. The man said to be the leader of the gang, Balsemao Tenete Muchurro, is well connected - his father is an officer in the Mozambican Defence Force (FADM), and his uncle is an officer in the security service, SISE.

These two officers repeatedly visited the police station to demand the release of Muchurro, so far without success. But this pressure may perhaps explain why the Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) did not interview the wounded doctor until Friday, three weeks after the attack.

The police also arrested a second member of the gang, 16 year old student Gil Alexandre Mausse. His family has tried to apologise to Antonio's family, but verbally and via a local official. This is not acceptable to the family. "We want this in writing and we want it delivered personally", said one of Antonio's relatives. "We're not here to play around".

The third assailant, named only as Lino, is believed to have fled to South Africa.
