Mum-of-three left paralysed after knife attack
Victim Annette Jemmet
By Jon Ryder, South London Press
A MUM-OF-THREE was left paralysed after a half-naked man burst into her flat and stabbed her - as her terrified eight-year old daughter watched in horror.
Annette Jemmet was left in a pool on blood after the frenzied attack. The shocking assault happened at Mandeville House, Worsopp Drive, on the Notre Dame Estate in Clapham just after 9am on Friday.
Best friend and neighbour Gina Sestanovich, 41, spoke exclusively to the South London Press, saying: "I heard screaming and banging and I knew straight away it was her.
"I ran down the stairs to her flat and I saw her on all-fours in her hallway, crying, in a massive pool of blood. I watch all those police programmes on TV but you never expect to see it for real.
"She was holding her neck, covered in blood and I thought she'd got head injuries. It was horrible - I keep getting flashbacks."
Gina, who is the godmother to one of the boys, took the children back to her flat after the attack.
She said the daughter saw everything, adding: "She told me she saw a knife and almost touched it, but decided she shouldn't in case there were fingerprints. I'm devastated for the kids.
"But I've spoken to Annette and she says if she is disabled, she will cope. She says she's so lucky to be alive for the sake of her children."
The traumatised eight-year old would normally have been at school but witnessed the entire attack at home because of a teacher-training day.
An air ambulance landed on nearby Clapham Common but she was taken by road to hospital.
The victim, aged around 30, is a youth worker at the Wednesday Creative Workshop youth group on the estate. Yesterday, she was in a serious condition in hospital with a partially severed spinal cord.
The attacker, who was naked to the waist, is described as black, about 5ft 10in tall and aged 30.
Brixton CID are appealing for witnesses to the attempted murder, and anyone who saw the man or who has any information should call the police on 020-849 2183.
