FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A 65-year-old man lost consciousness and movement in his arms and legs after an airboat accident in the Everglades, officials said.

Andrew Smith was ejected from one airboat when it passed through another airboat's wake, said Capt. Ken Kronheim of Broward County air-rescue. Smith was airlifted to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale; hospital officials refused to comment on his condition early Monday.

Smith landed on rocks; paramedics were concerned about hypothermia and the possibility of a spinal cord injury, officials said.

Rescuers were able to reach Smith because witnesses had both a cellular phone and a GPS tracking device that provided coordinates of their location, Kronheim said. The incident took place deep in the Everglades, about 40 miles west of Fort Lauderdale.
