I recently discovered that NSAID type pain relievers work very well with the pain in my back from the rods, but was concerned about long-term use. Does anyone here use them and which type are you using? I have had good luck with 400mg of motrin and with 375mg of naproxen. I think the naproxen last's a little longer. I am concerned about ulcers, Anyone use these type of pain killers long-term have any GI problems like bleeding or ulcers and stuff like that? I read about an nsaid called arthrotec that has a stomach protector mixed with it. I may ask my doc about that. thanks!

mornin, I just wanted to mention a med called cytotec?it was made specifficaly to take with your NSAIDs to help protect the stomach.I used to use this years ago while i was living on motrin for a herniated disc.It worked extremely well for this rather nasty burning pain that i started to get whenever i took the motrin. It was a lifesaver for me there for awhile as I would not have been able to tolerate the NSAIDs without it.I do believe that that med Arthrotec that you mentioned actually has the cytotec in it.i would give it a try and see how it goes.hope it works for you as well as it did for me,Marcia

Thanks firesmurf, i'll ask the doc about that.

so if my pain responds better to NSAID pain relievers better then say a CNS type pain releiver like ultram, does that mean my pain is more inflammatory type pain?

Yes, the NSAIDS are antiinflammatories that relieve the pain by controlling the inflammation.

In our SCI dogs we have found some can take the NSAIDS without any gastro problems whatsoever..many though within a couple of doses have blood in feces and elevated liver
counts. So..I would think it is a concern for humans also.

I have a very low tolerance to medicines in general. So if a symptom of adverse reaction
shows..I discontinue and contact my doc.

Same with our dogs..you don't know it until they show it. Some take extremely high doses
of carprofen/Rimadyl and have no adversity whatsoever..but when one does it can be fatal.

These dogs are then put on other type of meds. or alternative type inflammation controls. BUT..the Rimadyl works best of course in the end..and very quickly also.
