I noticed the past couple of months that when I sit in my chair too long that my ass starts to burn.I am not sure what to make of this but, when I get in bed and lay on my side the burning sensation fades http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif.I really don't know what to think, anybody ever had this or,a similar experience?
"everyday above ground is a good day"
This sounds exactly like what i have. The Dr's at my rehab center called it "burning butt."
It is neuropathic pain.
Exercise helps a lot. I also take Elavil for it and smoke a little herb.

Consider yourself lucky that your pain fades away if you are on your side. I'm a t-10 complete 4 1/2 years post accident and I've had the burning butt for nearly 4 years. My pain has progressed down the back of my thighs and into my groin and rectal areas as well and never fades away except when I'm asleep. I take 4000mg./day Neurontin, 120mg/day Cymbalta, and 60mg/day of MScontin and all that does is keep me from screaming all day. I had 2 separate CA DREZ microcoagulation surgeries in 2003 at Craig Hospital in Denver to try to rid myself of the devil inside and unfortunately neither one worked. Hang in there. There's a lot of pain research going on now using targeted neurotoxins like resiniferatoxin (RTX) and substance P - saporin (SP-sap) that attack and destroy very specific types of cells in regions of the spinal cord important for the perception of pain. This work is showing promising results in rats and human clinical trials may not be too far off.

My Dr.'s say that is neuropathic pain. But I tend to believe the other. Even though it sound cruel to say but pain is good, that means something is getting through. I have that burning sensation from my tits to my toes 24 hrs a day 7 days a week 365 days a year. I take 700mg of neurontin 6 times a day, 30mg of baclofin 4 times a day and 60mg of mscontin 3 times a day (morphine). Which like the other person said "that just keeps me from screeming all day long". Oh yea I also have a morphine pump that pumps 1.0mg every 24 hrs. Hang in there like you don't here that enough.
Ps. I agree with Jim a little herb goes a long way.
i remember the 1st time it happened to me. there was nothing and one day early on i just got the burning in the butt. i was told it was my hemorrhoids causing the pain. maybe it's possible the same is occuring w/you
I too have this unforgiving, burning pain. 2400mg of neurontin doesn't seem to be cutting it any more. Weed seems to make it worse for me though. I have read that many people have stopped taking their neurontin, because it wasn't working. I don't get it. Why are there such varied results?

some people have the kind of pain neurontin works on and they are in that aspect fortunate, a lot of times the levels have to be adjusted up 2400mg a day is still pretty low for pain. it it worked initially (neurontin) than hopefully a higher dose will work for you again,

WWA...it sure sounds like the answer to your question is "both". Since your legs are not actually burning or touching something hot, the pain you feel is neuropathic. Of course, in order to feel it, you would have to have some sensation...otherwise it'd just be numb.
When first hurt (L1 burst) I felt like I was on fire from neck to toes. After morphine drip and surgery I was numb from the waist down (at the time better than the burning). Then, after rehab, exercize and time (3 yrs), I only have burning in my calves and feet and have sensation everywhere except my butt.
I take 2400mg neurontin, 40mg oxycontin and .2mg clonidine daily and it allows me to get up, workout, etc. The burning in feet with the meds on a good day is pretty tolerable. Without the meds...like I'm standing in a french fryer!
Sensation does come back...and he always brings along his buddy named pain.

DUDE, I have the exact same thing and I questioned myself about it all the time. My ass would burn but also tingle at the same time. I would then go to bed and the pain would dissapate. Within two to three months of this pain I could actually feel myself rubbing my bare ass. Not that I'm always rubbing my bare ass but one day after a shower I just checked. It wasn't perfect but hay, it was something. It's been six months total now since it all started and it is good enough to trust when I need to relieve pressure from certain areas on my butt. Some feeling has come back in certain parts of my leggs, like above my kneecap on my right side and near the tops of my thighs front and back but only when they are squeezed hard. I hope it gets this way for you also. I'm sure the burning for me was just the nerves slowly gaining ground back. No burning now eccept my leggs in the morning when they need to be stretched. I'm a C5 incomplete but I haven't gained on any more movement just the arms and wrists.
