Hello to all, I hope all is well. I am not sure if I am in the right forum for this question but here goes: I'd like to inquire about H.O.. Can someone describe symptoms/indications for this condition? I have noticed a "feeling" in the buttocks area for a couple of days now and I am not alarmed enough to call my doc. I do know that the condition "tunnels" from within the affected site and appears on the skins surface as an irritation. Thanks for your input.

I am a Physical therapist and T-4 complete 1 yr post. I am not an expert on HO but I do remember learning that early detection is critical for limiting the negative effects. I think HO usually occurs within 6 months after TBI or post surgical procedures. HO can be painful and limit ROM in ones extremities. I recommend seeing a knowledgable DR ASAP.

Longbeard,
Heterotopic ossification (HO) most commonly occurs in the hip but can also occur in the knees, shoulders, elbows, and even spine, and sometimes forms in areas of pressure sores. The symptoms are variable but usually do not manifest with pain until it is grown to a size sufficient to produce skin or other pressure-induced changes.
The "feeling" that you feel in the buttock area may be due to many causes. HO can be easily detected and should be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and also drugs that reduce calcification. I agree with DA PT that you should see your doctor and check out what you have.
Wise.
