my husband has started feeling like his big right toe is aching and throbbing..he also says that when his shoes are on they are too tight.. He had surgery 2 months ago and his feet have been swollen...can someone tell me if they have experienced this and if anyone thinks this could be the start to something big.
thanks

Heather

Hi Heather,

What was the surgeon's explanation for this? Have you been back to him or your primary care doc to show them his feet? If not, that should be your first step. I've had pain in my foot after surgery that turned out to be central pain, neuropathic in nature. Since you say that he knows his shoes are on too tight, I assume that he has sensation, how much does he have? Also what kind of pain, as in what level? Because his feet are swollen, I think that's probably the source, and therefore it probably is NOT something big. That doesn't mean it isn't serious and its something the doc should see ASAP.

Never underestimate an individual, Never overestimate a bureaucracy.

actually he has not had sensation up until he started feeling that his shoe was too tight and we use electrical stimulation on all his muscles..I spoke with his therapist today and they think that the aching he is feeling is from where we are using estim and he is feeling the pain from where the muscle is starting to move...He can move his big right toe some... He was a C3 and has moved to a C6/C7 and he just started moving his right ankle a bit too..so who knows

Thats great, congratulations! If he's getting movement and sensation, that's a really good sign if it's been over a year and these improvements are just starting. Tell your husband to hang in there, this is where it gets rough. It took me almost 2 years to get back everything I could, I'm an L4inc Para. No pain, no gain (I sincerely hope none of that pain sticks around), but let us know how he's doing from time to time, that's why we hang out here http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif.
