My brother, 9 year post T7/8 complete paraplegic, just recently went through spinal fusion. The rods in the front are from T10 to L1.
When the doctor tried to put the rods in the back, he found the spine to dereriorated so the back is from T7 to L3. He was told that basically he had no back left.
They also told him he will not be able to put his own shoes or socks, and will have difficulty bending down or turning to the side.
We want to know what other difficulties will he be facing how can you he overcome them.
I have read of many that have to have the surgery redone. What should he watch for? and not do in order not to damage it. The Doc. sent him a brace for three months.
He is in tremendous pain. They gave him morphine for two weeks and it only took the edge off of the pain. He is taking vicodin now and still in pain. He feels crooked????? Can that be possible? Feeling crooked? H e says that maybe the rods are not even and that is why.
Also, he has lost hearing on his left ear. I say it will go away once his body clear so many meds will it???
While at the hospital, aside from showing him how to transfer from the bed to the chair nothing else was taught. The occupational therapist showed him how to put his shocks. Teh say he has been paralyzed all these year and should know it all now. I say this new body is stiffer his transfers scare me.
He is in tremendous pain still. Is this normal he had the surgery 20 days ago.
I am very discourage with all I read so far. I thought you had this kind of surgery to get better.
I know I am making a lot of questions but I know there are many out there with this same difficulties.
