Hi folks. I ruptured L4, L5 disks causing a spinal cord compression in august of 2001. This caused immediate partial paralysis of lower legs and feet and loss of sensation to various other areas in upper thighs and groin area. A few months after the injury I started having occasional sudden pains in various parts of my legs and feet. This is almost like and electrical shock and usually only last a second or so but may reoccur regularly for hours then suddenly go away. I dont see any pattern as to when or how severe this will be nor which areas will be affected. Also sometimes the pains are mild and other times very severe. Does anyone know what this is? I have never gotten a satisfactory answer from the rehab folks or the doctors. thanx, jeff'

Jeff, your comments sound like Central Pain. The international Association for the study of pain has devoted their september issue of Pain: Clinical Updates to understanding Central Pain. You can order a reprint from IASP@locke.hs.washington.edu. I think the cost is minimal and it is the most up to date article you can get. Also painonline.org is a good resource.
