IKU,

Has the pain been getting any worse since you started taking the Neurontin? You're on an *awfully* high dose.

The pain is about the same as when I was first injured 05/31/01 with a T11 severed cord. I was misdiagnosed for almost a year, operated on, for bladder UTI's and other crap they suspected/guessed might be causing my pain. It became fairly routine for me to spend a few days in the "best" hospitals in TN. Ha-Ha.What a joke. Basically I need to get rid of the damn pain so I can get on with my life and stay away from the butchers....

Stiggy,

4-aminopyridine refers to the drug that is a pyridine with an amino group in the 4 position.

There is a drug called 2, 4- diaminopyridine (2,4-DAP) which has similar effects to 4-aminopyridine but this drug does not penetrate the blood brain barrier. It may be useful for improving conduction of peripheral nerves. It has been considered for use by people who have peripheral demyelination, i.e. such as in cases of Guillian-Barre Disease.

I have not heard of 2-aminopyridine being used as a drug. I would urge great caution with the use of any of the other aminopyridines besides 4-AP, and 2,4-DAP. While both 4-AP and 2,4-DAP have been shown to be non-carcinogenic, several of the other pyridine analogs may be carcinogenic or toxic.

Some early reports have suggested that 4-AP reduces neuropathic pain in people with spinal cord injury. This may be because 4-AP increases the conduction of inhibitory as well as excitatory systems in the spinal cord. The former should reduce pain. However, this analgesic effect of the drug is not predictable. Also, 4-AP improves sensations and may "unmask" true noxious or sensory pain that is present.

Wise.

I have been taking Ultram for nearly seven years. It has helped mitigate the central pain I suffer from. I also take Neurontin (300 mg/4x/day). These drugs help make the pain tolerable but do not take it away completely. I also take hydrocodone for break through pain. I do not take it every day or for very long periods because I do not want my system to get used to having it.

How much Ultram do you take a day? It has been the only thing that
at least somewhat gets to my pain. I have been worried about the long
term effect of the drug. I find if I don't take it though, I am miserable. I have been taking it for about a year now.

I'm a T10 complete paraplegic. Accident 5/14/2000.

Constant burning pain in buttocks and thighs.

Current meds:
Neurontin 2400mg/day (3 X 800mg)
Nortriptyline 150mg/day
Effexor 150mg/day
Zanaflex (Tizanidine) 4 X 4mg = 16mg/day
MS Contin 2 X 15 mg = 30mg/day

all this does no more than take the edge off the pain.

I'm scheduled for DREZ surgery at Craig Hospital in Denver in mid April. It's my last hope
