Can someone help me find a painkiller that actually works
I have really bad neurogenic pain and have tried a few painkillers the one I am taking now is called Panlor SS and I don't feel anything from it. This is not the first painkiller I have taken that has not done anything for me I have tried a couple before I just don't remember their names. The only one that has worked for me so far has been Oxycontin but the problem with that was very bad constipation, and I didn't like the fact that I had to take it all the time the thing I like with painkillers is you can take it whenever you need it. Has anyone had this problem? And if you have why is this happening?
My question is can anyone tell me the name or names of a powerful painkiller(s) that actually works.
Thank you

a 100mg fentanyl or Duragesic patch helps me, but somedays it's hard to keep smiling and pretend your okay at work. At home I can cuss moan and drop enuf xanax to go to sleep.I read that fentanyl is much more powerful than morphine but since it's absorbed through the skin it's diluted I guess. I back up with 2 darvocet and my bbaclofen pump for spasms.WR

Dann21,
I'm glad that you indicate at least you can find some relief through OxyContin, but I also understand why you want another option. My first thought would be another drug with oxycodone, such as Oxycontin IR or Percocet. That would give you a way to have a "right now" dose of the same active ingredient that you indicate has helped in the past.
Other than that, there are quite a few things that *might* help, but takes a skilled doctor to help you work through them. Of course, there's also the possibility that nothing will work well enough to give you anything more than a partial reduction in pain. Of course, even that can be a blessing when it provides a badly needed break from a high level of pain.

I'm not one to give advice on drugs because I just had my accident in Oct. They tried all kinds of narcs on me but they finaly settled on 600mg. Neurontin three times a day. Took about a week to build up in my system but it seems to work for me. I had a lot of nerve damage because of the three I broke one also "burst". Good luck in looking

Wheelinarcher were you in Jefferson in Phila. If so you were in the room across from my son when you you were in the NICU.
Hi, I am a quadriplegic and also a pharmacist.
Like someone else said here, Neurontin (gabapentin) could be a good help here without the adverse effects of narcotics like oxycodone (ref. constipation). Even though this drug was put on the market to prevent seizures, it is effective in some types of neuropathic pain. It is usually started at a dosage as low as 100 mg 3 x/day and is cranked up until response (some are taking as much as 1200 mg 3 x/day (i.e. 3600 mg daily).
By the way, it is true that fentanyl (the active substance in Duragesic patches) is much more potent than morphine or oxycodone but is is on a weight to weight basis. So, the dose is adjusted to the potency! It is not the patch that is diluting the effect but the fact that the dosage is in mcg/h instead of mg/day (1 mg = 1000 mcg) with morphine or oxycodone.

Yea, a pharmacist! I have a question for you. Right now, after many, many tests and exploratory surgery I appear to have irritable bowel syndrome. I'm on nothing for nerve pain and really haven't had much of a problem with it recently. My problem is visceral pain right where the rectum would begin (where it joins the descending colon) on the inside. I was lucky and had a major pain bout begin just before my laparoscopy so the doc actually drew a circle where the pain was before I went into the ER. I am 100% ok on the inside. I even have beautiful pictures to prove it. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif So, I have been taking 5mg of oxycodone hydrocloride and after surgery 325mg of tylenol was added to it. This takes care of the pain but knocks my lights out. It does not cause constipation nor a need for softners, etc if you get my drift. I mean its side effects actually help. Would a fentynal patch over the pain area work better with the wanted constipating side effect but without the sedation? ny other ideas on this? So far I take Levsin as needed but have to go back to see my GI doc for some ideas on diet and other stuff to manage this. Since the codeine helps I assume that this is not neurogenic pain so was wondering about other options. I was impressed with how fast IV fentynal worked in the recovery room. Thanks for any info you have that I can hand my GI doc.

Dann, that is a fairly low dose of Neurontin for neuropathic pain. Most of my clients are taking 1200-3600 mg. total daily. It is supposed to be gradually increased until your pain is manageable or your start to have side effects that you cannot tolerate.

If anyone can come up with some new ideas I haven't tried yet, that would be good. I'm sick of being unable to eat due to severe abdominal pain, and unable to go out due to that and the rest of the pains. There are better ways to live - I read about them right on this site.

hi all, i am now on a new medication, 1600mg neurontin three times a day, 20 mg baclofen three times a day and duragesic 100 . i had an intrathecal with clonidine, ketamine and morphine 6 days ago. since then, my pain is quite released well. in september i will have a pump for baclofen and morphine.
i am t9 for 48 months. i don't know if this medication will work for long, but for now i am enjoying life fully again, thing that didn't happenned for more than 3 years. if it can help someone,i will be glad. the only thing i can tellis : NEVER GIVE UP.
good luck all.
I don't understand why anyone would take any drug for pain unless you know why or where you're in, pain?? Except for spazums.

Hawk,
If you're in severe pain, finding a way to stop the pain takes priority over "little details" like finding out the exact etiology of the pain.
In most cases, the person has at least a pretty good idea what's behind their pain, even if it doesn't all make sense.

I have been posting here, on this forum, about my hubby's neuropathic pains. He has tryed Duragesic patch, he had side effects, he was on morphine while in hospital, he was halucinating. Oxicontin helped somewhat, but he didn't want to stay on it, made him drowsy and sleepy, that doesn't help if you are trying to do therapy to get better and you are falling asleep in the chair. So we ended up with 4800 mg/day of Neurontin plus Darvocet as needed (not more than 8 pills/day - I think that's what the script says) - usually just one or two Darvocet would do the job.
Then he took a little break from all his excercises due to heat and the pain disappeared - I'd better say eased down quite a bit. So lately we are trying to cut down on Neurontin and some of the excercises, so maybe he can get up earlier in the morning and go to bed in decent hour - not moonlighting. I don't know if this helps, but really try to experience with the source of pain and circumstances.
Lots and lots of LUCK! ;

This may help with the constipation.I eat a lot of fruit, and breyers fruit yogurt.
Yakima Fruit Paste Recipe
DOSE: 1-2 tablespoons per day
1 pound prunes
1 pound raisins-pitted
1 pound figs
4 oz senna tea (look in your health food store, it looks like a bunch of leaves)
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup lemon juice
1. Prepare tea-use about 2 1/2 cups boiled water added to tea and steep 5 minutes.
2. Strain tea to remove tea leaves and add only 1 pint tea to a large pot, then add fruit.
3. Boil fruit and tea for 5 minutes.
4. Remove from heat and add sugar & lemon juice. Allow to cool.
5. Use hand mixer or food processor to blend fruit mixture into smooth paste.
6. Place in plastic container and place in freezer. (Paste will not freeze but will keep forever in freezer).
7. Spoon out what you require each day.
Enjoy eating it straight off the spoon.
Spread it on toast or add hot water and make a drink.
* If the fruit paste is not working (you are not having bowel movements) then you need to increase the amount of fruit paste you are taking.
* If the fruit paste makes you have very loose stools then you need to cut down on the amount of fruit paste you are taking. Perhaps even taking it every other day in some cases.
* Check with a hospice nurse if you are having problems with the fruit paste or you have any questions.

Dear Sue,
While reading your recent post on painkillers to take for neuropathic pain I noticed that her longtime you had an undiagnosed problem with your stomach. It sounds like you finally found your answer or in the your little bowel syndrome. Have you found relief with his diagnosis? Going on 10 months now I'm actually in the position that you were in and extremely frustrated. Anytime I eat something other than the fish or rice and the like, I get pretty extreme gas and bloating shortly after eating. But the worse symptom comes only while laying down and sleeping. I get intense tightness and pain causing my legs to spasm 10 times worse than ever had before. I've lost over 25 pounds during this ordeal and tried getting my gallbladder removed, checked for ulcers and been scoped both ways etc.
Are any these symptoms close to yours? If you, or anyone else, have any idea what I'm suffering from please let me know.
Thanks for moderating this board, it is a blessing for many people including me.
God bless,
Patrick
PS- DAN21 ... for my chronic pain I take 50 milligrams oxycontin 2 times per day and Norco for breakthrough. You can contact me if you have any other questions.

I have taken Hydrocodone in the past and it works wonders for pain and makes me feel human again, but I don't have a regular doctor and I don't have an ongoing prescription for it because they say it is addictive. So, I just live with the pain and try to keep busy and put the pain out of my mind. I getting to believe though that living with constant pain has harmful effects on the body, and that it sure would be nice to get rid of the constant burning sensation in the buttocks and legs, but I don't want the doctors to think I'm just some dope head wanting to feel good all the time. The Hydrocodone (2 tabs) just kind of takes the edge off the pain. Is it really that addictive or is there something as effective and not addictive for long term (until a cure) use ?
Jack, find a good pain doc who will prescribe what you need to control your pain. If you can handle the side effects, and there's something that works, a quality doc will put you on a regimen of a long-acting opiate, if nothing else works. Check out the MGH forums I posted about in a prior message.
I don't understand some doctors. They wouldn't tell a patient who needs baclofen every day to control spasms to only take it occasionally - why do they treat pain medications differently than everything else?
It really helps & prayer...keeps my my mind out of pain
