Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Dedicates Invacare Wheelchair-Accessible Passenger Coach
8/6/2002Â*
ELYRIA, Ohio, Aug 6, 2002 (BUSINESS WIRE) --

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) recently dedicated a newly upgraded wheelchair-accessible passenger coach as the Invacare-sponsored car, to acknowledge a major gift from the company.

The refurbished coach contains a wheelchair lift and 36 seats that can be folded up to make room for wheelchairs. The special car makes the railway ride possible for those children and adults who would otherwise not be able to enjoy it.

"Invacare is proud to be associated with the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and
its mission to make its service accessible to everybody," said Mal Mixon, chairman and CEO of Invacare Corporation, the global leader in the manufacture and distribution of innovative home medical products that promote recovery and active lifestyles. "We hope that people from all over the state and country will take advantage of this wonderful railroad car so they can see all the natural beauty that this park has to offer. Invacare believes in the `Yes, you can' spirit, and that is what this passenger car is all about."

The car, formerly known as the Fort Mitchell, was originally designed as a combination baggage and passenger car in the 1940s for the Central of Georgia Railroad. Since its purchase by CVSR in 1994, there have been more than $250,000 in renovations to the car for the sole purpose of providing accessibility to physically challenged customers who would not otherwise have an opportunity to experience Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Invacare Corporation (NYSE:IVC) is the global leader in the manufacture and distribution of innovative home medical products which promote recovery and active lifestyles through more than 25,000 providers. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad runs through the heart of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The cars are vintage climate-controlled coaches mostly built in the 1930s and 40s and originally saw passenger service on the Seaboard and Santa Fe Railroads. Twenty percent of regional ridership is comprised of school field trips. The CVSR offers a number of roundtrips beginning in Independence and Akron. These include Hale Farm and Village, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Inventors Hall of Fame, Akron Zoo, Akron Art Museum and Visitors Center, plus many historic sites and nature trails. A rail extension is planned to Canton, which will include the Pro Football Hall of Fame, McKinley Monument and the First Ladies Museum. The proposed extension to Tower City in Cleveland will offer the Science Center, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the William G. Mather Museum. For more information, visit http://www.cvsr.com.
