Wheelchair Marathon Begins

Lagos, Feb 28, 2002 (P.M. News/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- The Lagos State Special Sports Association (LSSA) in conjunction with skylak Sports Club, Lagos has concluded arrangements to hold the first ever, Lagos State Open Wheelchair Race for Disabled Athletes.

The race which is being sponsored by First City Monument Bank (FCMB) will take place on Saturday, March 2, 2002. The race will feature 30 athletes and will be flagged off at the National Stadium at 9a.m by Mrs. Oluremi tinubu, wife of the Lagos State governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the route map by the organisers, the athletes will take off at the National Stadium, Surulere, move through Ikorodu Road to Maryland and back to the National Stadium.

Speaking on the event, at a briefing herald it, Femi Adebiyi, Head of Research and Corporate Affairs of FCMB, sponsors of the race, said it is in the tradition of the bank to contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life while giving back to the operating environment that makes the bank's existence and business success possible.

Adebiyi informed that this is not the first time the bank would be involved in the sponsorship of a sport event having been part of the Nigerian Polytechnic Games Association Games (NIPOGA Games) last year.

He concluded by stressing that his organisation is using the race to educate Nigerians including the disabled that disability does not automatically translate to inability.
