Missed me, didn't you? Yea, I bet... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
But I now have my new computer and tons of sheer blinding POWER! Oops. Sorry, got carried away but it is a big jump from from a Pentium 1 to a 4. Anyway, I am also back with my real name. Amazing how a melted down modem and sound card can destroy an entire life. I have my old hard drive contents back too so I have links for almost anything you can think of again. And, once I figure out how to get this newest version of Windows to accept the fact it has another harddrive as back up (not going to suffer a meltdown twice)I will be zipping through cyberspace at the speed of light. Yell, if you need help.

Hi Sue:
I was wondering up until last week what was going on with your computer. Good luck with Windows XP and feel free to share "the good, the bad, the ugly" with this new operating system.

So far the ugly will have to wait until Monday and a call to the tech people at MS. My main volume control has WAV files mixed up with the volume control to CDs. I originally thought it was the MusicMatch program but it's in the entire system. So while I couldn't figure out why my CDs had no sound output, my neighborhood could hear the "You've Got Mail" wav everytime I signed on to AOL.
The New Net Vista keyboard has new nifty controls though for sounds and muting right on the keyboard above the numbers pad.
And does anyone know what a "filter driver" is in relation to my back up hard drive? So far Windows recognizes it's there but the Wizard can't install or find the correct driver. Oh well, I am learning as I go.
Leo? I'm going to be watching you... http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

Sue
Tell me more about ur problems with the XP OS
I may be able to help ya .
I use it for almost 2 months and got known to it.
It's really the best OS I've seen by now only Linux Mandrake 8.1 is maybe a little better........a question of yourself. Its best compatible with P4 congratulations for the new PC.
I'll be glad to help if possible. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Bye
Talking about me, DA? Actually, I'm pro-50 years.
I have serious plans for the next 50 years. Of course, many of them are dependent upon a cure so I can't begin them all, right now. Maybe I can rebuild my muscles, though. And having a wife it might be possible to start a family. But having a wife who is more able than I am to do certain tasks that are traditionally the man's responsibility is heart breaking. And missing out on the joy of complete two-way sex is also a major deficit in my life. Moreover, seeing clowns without half the heart and character I have enjoy all the rest of life's pleasures while my pallette is so miniscule - well, that hurts pretty bad, too.
But accusing someone here on the cure forum that they want to wait ten years for a cure is something that even those frustrations won't make me sink to. I'm a better person than that. Unfortunately, you are not.

jeff i agree with your post 100%. i feel the same as you. life is too short and the arrival of the cure is taking a long time. you do see the dilemma, right?

I hope Jeff doesn't mind but I think since we all seem to have computers as part of our life support systems I'll move this to the Leisure, recreation and travel forum. And thanks for the offer Vladko! I'll let you know as I find the bugs. My biggest problem right now is getting the Windows XP OS to recognize the added hard drive we put in to back things up. This has a Pentium 4 and 40 GHz of HD was standard. We added another 40 Ghz with a MAXTOR 5400 RPM 3.5 inch ATA/EIDE Hard Drive Kit. The wizard doesn't work and I keep getting error messages on start up that I have new hadware but need a filter driver. It also shows as an error in my device manager.

Sue Pendleton I think I can help ya...
Probably you meant that your HDD is 40 GB http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Check the jumper on the back of the HDD the problem is surely in it the problem isn't in XP
just check weather u've put the jumper on the wright position - slave
change it and everything will be just OK
if any more problems just call glad to help
bye http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
I also plan to upgrade my pc to P4 and will get an IBM HDD 60GB 7200 ultra/ata 100 its not so cheap already how much did it cost to ya ur configuration just curious whats the prices there

Can you delete the other copy of this thread? I tried to just move the ones pertaining to computers and the options wouldn't let me delete the others on your forum. Thanks. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
Vladko, Yes I meant 40GB. I used to work with thing in hertz and get them confused a lot... We did switch the cables correctly and I still get an error from XP. I called IBM and we installed the extra HD correctly so they insist it is a Microsoft problem. The extra 40GB cost $100 US. I had a friend who works in the computer field install the drive so that was free. And he moved everything on my old harddrive to my new one in one folder. Amazing! My old comouter was a 1.6 GB. I'm deleting from there once I have the new programs running correctly. I will just be backing up documents and presentations there. I did see a sale price this week at 2 stores only for the same kit for $40. You might try egghead.com and see what they have for prices. Also I ordered by tower and speakers through IBM.com. That way I could build what I wanted with the programs I wanted. It's a Net Vista A22p. There are other versions of the Vista A that are cheaper but have smaller HDs or use Celeron processors or WindowsME or 2000.
Are computer parts hard to come by in Bulgaria? How much is online time for you? If you don't mind me asking that is. :-)

Sue,
Do you mind if I give you a call later? I may be able to help you out and I have some questions about Wicca. I may be going to a Yule celebration in the near future with my nurse and... well, I just have some questions that would probably best be answered by someone who knows. :-)

Sue
Well here in Bulgaria we're up to date with all the computer hardware and software. But it's not commont to buy online here.
Everyone goes to a sore and buys one and its very common here to assemble the PC by yourself.
Buy parts separately at the lowest price u can find them and then assemble them. Nothing complicate.
Mine is assembled the same way. Also here nobody bothers about the software its "free" here.
I know many friend who had XP months before its official preesntation http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif GOT IT http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
So that's how things stand here.....

Sue, did you happen to try what Vladko said? The main hard drive should have its jumper set to 'Master' and the second hard drive set to 'Slave.' I haven't used XP yet, but that's the first thing I'd check.

An idea....
Check weather the jumper on the back side of ur new HDD is on Master position and then try all possible positions of the jumper of the old HDD but only the vertical ones!!!
Nothing bad can happen it can only work/not work http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
Try this........Think will help

Thanks Vladko and Rus,
The new tower goes back to the IT whiz this week to see what we can rearrange so it works they way you all think it should. Oh, and Steven. :-) The only thing he said that I semi-understood was that slaving the original equipment HD to the new HD is I may get duplicate programs running. It's not like I don't have the space for them though. :-)
BTW, for all those who also use Lotus amnd will be upgrading to SmartSuite Millenium Edition with Notes 5.0 save your old manuals. The new $30 manual is Lotus for Dummies!! Don't bother ordering it. At least IBM/Lotus still gives decent service over the phone and without waiting forever.
Vladko....does all your software come with "genuine Microsoft product" stamped all over it? I have never seen this amount of copyright protection on anything before. Every program in XP has it though and I hear some programs not bundled with XP will not work with,um...shared software. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif
And does anyone have a copy of Battle Chess or know where I can get a copy of it for Windows98, ME or XP? I lobve it but the only copy I've found has a government owned number on it.... But at least XP has come back with 3D Pinball! It can be played with two thuumb knuckles if need be. http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Sue, I recently found an old CD of Battle Chess that I had back when I had my 386DX 40mhz PC back in '93-'94. I installed it on my latest computer, and for some weird reason, the battles don't happen. The characters square off, then the loser disappears. It sucks. So, I want to find a version for newer computers if I can. Or I may uninstall then re-install it.

I just reread the instructions from Maxtor, Vladko. It may be a simple driver problem. Their website doesn't have any updates for XP yet. I wrote them and hopefully that problem will be solved. I talked to the IT guy myself and he tried every combination you guys suggested and then went back and also got errors when he tried to reinstall my old hard drive as the back up. So, IBM says it's not them and the Maxtor unit is installed ok according to their site. It appears it does work I just keep getting driver errors. I'll let you all know what Maxtor says.
I'd try the reinstall, Rus. The copy I have wasn't even loaded with the manual. And I don't either floppies or a CD of it. I'd have to copy it directly from the laptop. Must have ben installed by one of the office guys for trips. That's the pits because as you know, at lower difficulties the damn computer can decide to go into checkmate 3 moves ahead and not allow you to go back and see what it did. And mine won't let the human castle the rook. Grrr. I have it on a Thinkpad with a Pentium 1 but only 24RAM and it is so slow. I normally play in 2D when I'm on the battery. But 3D is so cool. I love how the Bishop beats pawns to death with the staff. :-) I'll check egghead.com. They often have older stuff. Just have to hope Windows can handle updating.
