RECRUITING PARTICIPANTS FOR A BRAIN-IMAGING RESEARCH STUDY OF WOMEN WITH COMPLETE SPINAL CORD INJURY

Dr. Barry Kamisaruk and his colleages at Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark are conducting a brain imaging research study on women who have a complete interruption of the spinal cord at levels between thoracic 7 and 10.

The purpose of the study is to determine whether you have perceptual and/or brain activity responses to cervical self-stimulation. The brain imaging method we use is "functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging." It is not painful, and requires no injections. The entire procedure is performed at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey, U.S.A., in conjunction with Rutgers-The State University of New Jersey, and takes about 5 hours on a single day. The research is funded by the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, and has been approved by the Institutional Review Boards for the Protection of Human Subjects in Research of both Universities. If you fulfill the inclusion criteria, you will be paid $550 for your participation. Your travel (long distance

including international, if necessary) and lodging expenses, if necessary, and expenses for an assistant to accompany you (including your assistant's transportation and lodging) will be paid by the project. A full description of the study including the informed consent forms is available for your review prior to your deciding to participate, and the investigators are available to answer any questions you may have.
