Exercise, Standing & Ambulation with Implanted FES Systems
Principal Investigators:
Ronald J. Triolo, Ph.D., John A. Davis, M.D.
Target population: Persons with thoracic or low cervical level spinal cord injury
Abstract:
This project addresses the immobility associated with paralysis by providing a means to exercise, stand and maneuver in the vicinity of the wheelchair to individuals with spinal cord injures (SCI) through the application of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES). A coordinated approach to the prescription and installation of surgically implanted FES systems for individuals with varying levels of preserved volitional movement will be employed. A single 8-channel CWRU/VA implanted receiver-stimulator (IRS-8) will be used for exercise and standing in individuals with complete motor deficits, and to facilitate walking in selected individuals with partial paralysis. The protocols for applying and evaluating the FES standing system will be distributed to two other sites within the VA health care system in a multi-center clinical trial. A second implanted stimulator (for a total of 16 channels of stimulation) will be offered to qualified users of the standing system with complete injuries who wish to add short distance stepping with FES to their repertoire of functions. Procedures for walking in complete or incomplete paralysis will continue to be refined for future technology transfer.
