Objective: In this study, ninety individuals with chronic SCI and obesity will be recruited and randomly assigned to a diet and exercise, diet only, or to a no-treatment control group. The objectives of this study are to: 1) determine the prevalence of obesity across spinal injury levels, 2) test the efficacy of diet and exercise on obesity in individuals with SCI compared to diet only or to no treatment, and 3) determine changes in coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia and impaired glycemic control, and their relationship to weight loss as a result of diet and exercise group compared to diet only or no treatment. It is predicted that diet and exercise will significantly reduce obesity and CHD risk factors and total and regional fat mass compared to diet alone and to no treatment.
