I need ideas for a new lifestyle of eating.
Thanks,

Hi, Matt,
Hmm, the only thing I can say is that keeping your bladder somewhat 'acidy' can help bladder stones from forming, and also help to prevent UTIs. My son's urologist actually told him to drink lemonade to help out with that. If you're having bladder spasms, I'd suggest a visit to your urologist first, to discuss anti-spasm meds like Ditropan for the spasms.
Re your 'new lifestyle' of eating, what are you eating now? Just IMHO, but I think there are too many confusing 'diets' out there - one says restrict this, and one says restrict that; I think that there are certain ways we can eat in a more healthy way without going overboard in any one direction. I'm referring to the 'no-carb' here; good carbs, in moderation, contribute to a 'wholeness' in our diet, and I don't feel they should be excluded. The same for the excess 'fatty acids'; olive oil has been proven to have healthier benefits than other oils.
Lemme know what you're after, and I'll try to help!

Hello Marmalady,
Lemonade sounds good! My URO gave me Ditropan and Urimax(sp?)- I am looking to prevent the spasm instead of patching the spasms. My new "lifestyle" (I am still working on)is eating less and exercising more. The best diet I found the "consumption" diet helps you lose weight http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif.Seriously, less I stop eating when I am full, not when my plate is clean. I have Intersticial Cystistis and chatted on their boards and found that if I take "pelief"(from Walgreen's) before I eat and it does help. I am drinking less beer (can you believe my Dr. told me to drink years back.)I have been reading this site and enjoy the food forum so I can learn new ideas.

Don't know if you can prevent the spasms, as they're primarily coming from your SCI, not your diet. Dont' mean to sound like a downer here, just trying to help!
Some really basic 'consumption', sort of 'duh' ideas about 'dieting' that I think are just common sense -
- As you said, stop when you're full, not when your plate is clean - Momma won't mind, I promise!
- In line with that, use smaller plates; instead of serving your dinner on a big dinner plate, serve smaller portions on an 8" salad plate, so it looks like there's more food on the plate.
- The basic 'food pyramid' of lots of veggies, and smaller amount of lean meat, fish, and carbs, is basically a good one.
- Don't forget to give yourself a night off every week, to eat whatever you want! http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif
- Use olive oil for cooking and salad dressings - make your own dressings - cheaper and better!
- Always keep grapes in the fridge! When you have a sugar jones, it's better to munch on a few of those instead of candy, cookies, etc.
- Get whatever exercise you can, and get in the habit of doing it regularly.
Maybe some others can add just some general tips, hope these help!

Hi Marmalady,
Those are great ideas! I liked the one of making your own salad dressing - her is one of my favorite: http://www.chitterlings.com/21dec02.html#poppy
I agree with giving yourself a reward once a week - (I have to cut back on rewarding mtself every day lol) Today I am going to cook out Chicken breast, broccoli and wild rice.(can you believe Wal-mart did not have any corn on the cob yesterday) It is a beautiful day in Ga. today http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif We are going to throw the kids in the pool and play basketball. The smaller plates were a great idea, I had never heard that one!
Thanks,
Matt
